What's your favorite National Park?
    #24923733 - 01/18/18 05:02 PM (6 years, 11 days ago)

My brother and I are in the early stages of planning a visit to one of the National Parks.  We'll likely embark on a 3 night backpacking trip.  The plan is to do this in late April.

I spend a fair amount of time outdoors but have only visited Canyonlands NP and Rocky Mountain.  My brother hasn't seen shit and doesn't travel much so my goal is to take him somewhere that's otherworldly so he blows his fucking mind.

Any suggestions?  What are some of your favorites?

Yellowstone is a must see for everyone. There are tons of trails that can take you far away from tourists....the land seems to be alive with all the hot springs and different colored landscapes.

My second choice would be Yosemite.....so much variation between the big trees and the rock croppings. If you are an experienced hiker...try the half dome trail....it is brutal but well worth it when you get to the top.:sunny::peace:

Yeah I agree  with Yellowstone. Hate the traffic and love the interior.

If you are looking for otherworldly and mind blowing, look into Bryce Canyon(UT), Arches(UT), or Joshua Tree(CA).
The ones where they filmed episodes of the original star trek.

Yellowstone would be so dope but not late April or early May.  Looks like only one road will be open in early May.  And that's still a maybe depending on weather.

My DREAM vacay someday is to start in yellowstone and backpack for 4-5 nights, then car camp to Glacier for a few nights and then 4-5 nights in Glacier.  It'll happen someday but not yet.  I need to get to Yellowstone before that Supervolcano erupts and wipes out half of our country

Yosemite is a maybe right now.  April/May is a wildcard.  And from what I can tell, their permit process is a lottery and even their popular hikes are done by lottery.  I can't book this shit and then find out right before we go that we don't have a camp site or can't do any of the cool hikes....like the half dome.  LOOKS AMAZING!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I was considering all theee of these actually.  Do you know if you have to pack in your water for a 3-4 day backpacking trip?

And yes totally otherworldly.  That Bryce Canyon photo reminds me of canyonlands in the needles district

How long did this take you and did you have water sources?

I've only done day hikes in those parks. We packed all our water.
They are all desert wilderness, so plan on lots of water. At least one gallon per person per day.

From the web:
  Bryce canyon-
Hydration Stations to fill your water bottles are found in several locations in the park. Check for locations on the map in the park newspaper.
  Arches-
You can get water at the visitor center or Devils Garden Campground.
  Joshua tree-
Bring the water you will need to the park with you. Potable water is available at only a few locations near the edges of the park
  Grand canyon-
https://www.nps.gov/grca/planyourvisit/refilling_stations.htm
Seems like there's a ton of places, but they are all on the rim.

Well right now it's a tossup between Yosemite and Great Smoky Mountain.  Opposite ends of the spectrum on all fronts if you ask me but that's where my gut has taken me so far.  I ordered two guide/hiking books for each NP.  After a little more research I plan to finally pick one and then we'll zero in on our itinerary.

Also I've decided to push the trip back to July/August to allow for more planning.  Plus neither park look that appealing in April or early May.

It's funny how planning trips like this is almost as fun as the trip itself...almost

Yosemite is definitely the front runner right now.  Getting a permit in July/August is going to take a miracle though.  Where did you stay in Yosemite and what did you do?  Also what time of year was it?

I've been there a couple times. Twice in the spring and once in the winter. In the fall we camped at a place that was called like Tamarack flats, its above the valley and the sites are really nice. There is also a resort outside of Yosemite named Rush Creek that is really nice, we stayed there in the winter. In the spring we went backpacking.

We mostly just did day hikes throughout the park and other nearby wilderness areas. Went swimming in the rivers and falls. I think Mariposa Grove opens up this Summer. I've been wanting to see that area.

A fall camping trip eh?  Was it cold as hell?  Did you guys require permits for any of the above mentioned stuff?  I'm guessing yes on the camping...?

From what I'm reading, you need to submit permit applications for camp sites 6 months in advance.  When you submit your request you list your 3 preferred choices and then you'll hear back at a later date whether or not you've been accepted.  I read somewhere online that during peak season, they get approx 750 permit requests per day...FUCK!!!

Also..could you clarify what "wilderness areas" means?  I recently joined a yosemite forum to help plan this trip and people keep using that term but I don't know what the fuck it means.  Is that term synonymous with backcountry?

Yosemite is just one of the parks in that area. There is also Desolation Wilderness, Inyo, Ansel Adams, Sequoia, and others.

Fall camping was pretty nice. It got down in the 30s at night, but it was ok with extra blankets. The day were perfect weather for hiking. I think we got a permit that morning, October isn't that busy.

I forgot what we had to do to backpack. We might have made a reservation online then checked in when we got there. I think back-country camping is the same a backpacking.

The valley sites fill up fast, but other areas don't fill up as fast. We backpacked to this area in Inyo last spring. It's the SE side of Yosemite. The hike was grueling, but the views and having this whole lake just for me and my wife was well worth it.

Nice.  Thanks for the intel.  I LOVE the great outdoors.  It took me moving to NYC about 5 yrs ago to truly appreciate it.  Ever since moving here each one of my vacations has been centered around nature.  Next up...Costa Rica in 3 weeks.  We're spending 3 nights in a national park/beach and then 3 nights up in the cloud forests.  Can't wait to do some night hikes in the jungle!!!

If you're by Grand Canyon, take the short ride to Antelope Canyon. While not a national park, it's in the neighborhood and a must see.

Also some favorites of mine, Arches, Bryce, Zion, Canyon de Chelly. Glacier holds a special place, Denali as well.
