Another tyvek mono thread for your brain
    #24923692 - 01/18/18 04:45 PM (6 years, 11 months ago)

So, i know this has been beaten to death. But i was wondering if 6 2 inch holes drilled up high, 1 layer of tyvek taped over holes, then small 1/8th size holes in a line every 1 inch all around the sides at substrate height might work. Heres my thinking, co2 is heavier than o2 so the co2 will flow out of the small holes at substrate height and will pull in fresh o2 from the tyvek holes up top. This will also be pulling the moisture in a downwards pattern with the microflow of air. Idk just a thought. These tubs are colonizing right now and the holes are drilled as explained, i have duct tape over the small holes while it colonizes the coir and will remove when ready to fruit. If it seems like its not getting enough fae ill simply pull the tyvek and replace with polyfil. I did the tyvek first because i have 10000 tyvek envelopes and no polyfil. But i will buy some of its looking necessary. I dont use lids, i use press n seal around the top. Im making up 2 tubs a day at the moment, each tub gets 4 qts spawn and 1/2 brick coir 1 qt verm and a handfull of gypsum. About 2 inch substrate. Im going for fast colonozation, big first, maybe second flush then on to the next. I ran out of little buddy's almost 8 months ago because i got lazy and sloppy got contams and had to start from scratch, so im stockpiling to make sure it never happens again, i have 10 or 11 friends and we all microdose daily, have been for a few years and because i thought i was good on stock i ran out... never again!!

I give you mushy mountain!!

I know that there is talk about "heavier co2 laden air exiting trough the bottom holes". This makes no sense to me at all.

The substrate generates heat and pushes air upward as it evaporates, the warm air with less pressure exits trough the top of the tub and the colder outside air that has higher pressure and is coldest at the bottom will push air in trough the bottom holes. This is what makes perfect sense to me

It doesn't work like that. Yeah co2 is heavier, but if it worked that way, we'd have to live on mountain tops to breathe.

Eh, i figured i was wrong somehow, the holes should allow microcurrents to travel across the surface of the substrate either way

Honestly im fully expecting to cover the small holes with micropore tape put 4 or 6 more holes at substrate height and use polyfil. Im already resigned to it this was just to really allow for ge during colonization. Also i knowbi have heard ALOT on people introducing fruiting immediately after spawning but i seriously highly disaggree with this method. Everythi g dries out for no reason, and any exposed grain almost definantly contams.

I like to keep covered for consolidation as well. The myc looks WAY healthier when you go to fruiting.
