Candy Cap Mushrooms?
    #24921025 - 01/17/18 05:31 PM (3 years, 3 months ago)

Found these guys today.  Smell slightly sweet.  Found amongst a kind of oak tree.

Pretty sure it's a candy cap but I don't know which kind.  As I was picking them I did  notice a latex when I cut through the stems of one, but I did not know to watch to see if it changed its consistency/color.

Would these be considered edible?

Hey ID’ers did you read the OPs description (not being an ass)?
Sweet smell. Lactate. Oak trees. What about L. Rufulus or similar?

Good call and I should know better than to skimp reading the description. I think you're right now I've read it properly and studied the pictures better. Again, I only glanced at them, thought I saw an annulus and a couple of hairy scales. On closer inspection they're not present.

Sounds like a Lactarius sp. I've never seen them in real life so can't say that they are them with any confidence.

Looks like L. Rufulus to me. dry them and see if you like how they smell. I found a whole mess of these last year but the smell didn't turn me on enough to eat em.

People use them as desert toppings or in cookies I read.
They can get up and over 20-40 bucks an oz.

Hey guys, thanks for all the attention.

I found these near an oak tree fruiting across perhaps a 15ft by 12ft area.  They were not picked in one cluster like I've seen Armilarria spp.

They smelled sweet when I picked them, and as they are drying they are becoming intensely aromatic.

I noticed a kind of latex when I cut the stem of a larger one when I was picking.  As the mushrooms dried I attempted to reproduce this with a fine razor blade, and did not get anything to really happen.  I suspect the mushrooms are to dry?  There was one cap that secreted a small amount of latex, but my camera would definitely not be able to document this.

They are, for lack of better word, slightly fuzzy on the caps.  They seem to curl at the ring of the cap similar to pictures I've seen of candy caps.

I am too new to this hobby to feel comfortable eating these mushrooms while there is disagreement with the ID.  I would feel a lot more comfortable with a solid ID.

Recently, I had a Candy Cap infused Old fashioned at a restaurant.  They had candy cap infused simple syrup for the cocktail.  The aromatics I got from that cocktail are exactly what I am smelling with these mushrooms.  An intense maple syrup/burnt sugar aroma.  My fiance and good friend have both smelled these mushrooms and can confirm the intense maple aroma.

I should also add I am currently attempting a spore print. I'm using the same technique I have used for Psilocybe Cyanescens:

Placing the caps, gills down on aluminum foil with a plastic container over the mushrooms to prevent wind.

I think the mushrooms are to dry to deposit anymore spores?

As the container is lifted, there is an intense aroma of maple syrup.

Yea those are definitely not Honeys. It's likely that they're candy caps if they smell strongly of maple syrup and sugar.

I'm guilty (hangs head in shame). Not sure how I missed that.

I think they are L. Rufulus.  The spore print was smaller than what I had hoped, but a few did leave some behind: a creamy to white spore print.  I will try to take a photo but I think it's to faint for the camera.  However, it seems very clear that these are all the same mushroom.

The maple scent is still present, although not as intensely as yesterday.  Although I do have a cold....

It seems the consensus is that these are indeed candy caps.

I don't think they are Rufulus, as I'm pretty familiar with both. They are much more red in color while having less maple and more fenugreek aromas/flavors.

I'm sorry, that was an error on my part.  I am still learning, I meant to say Rubidus, as per your initial post.

So the real question, do you think this is safe to eat?  It seems like people are confirming the ID, and the spore print seems to match.
