Field capacity with black kow manure
    #24913786 - 01/14/18 03:03 PM (7 years, 3 days ago)

Im having trouble figuring out how wet my substrate should be.  Im using roughly black kow cow manure, verm, coir, and gypsum.  Its not spongey like pure coir. When I squeeze it, some of the whole mixture goes between my fingers and drips out. Its like a thick mud. But if I carefully stop most of it, i can squeeze it and see water pool up between my fingers and only a couple drops comes out.

I have a Hold All 3-Way meter from Lowes that measures moisture.  Can I use it to test the moisture?  What % moisture would I be looking for?
Any time Ive tried it, its maxed out and I feel like its not that wet, but maybe im off.  Its brand new so it should be working.

Edit: I put some in a wire strainer, hanging over paper to see if any water leaks out, would this be enough to tell me?

68-75%. Squeeze until a few drops or a tiny rivulet of water comes out.  Cow manure becomes the cosistancy of dirt once it's processed.  Since you have coir consider leaving out the black Kow.

Is there anything in-between that I can do? Like use a smaller amount. With the amount of spawn I have, it would cost a lot to use a block of eco-earth for each tub.

Are $10 meters accurate?  I feel like nothing drips out and then I add water until its a sludge, like wet dirt.

Also I made a couple tubs already with this consistency and now that I think its too wet, is there anything I can do?  They smell fine and are colonizing.

If it's sludgy up the vermiculite content until a nice spongy texture is achieved, then make sure that the moisture content is field capacity.

Cow manure on its own it's own requires to be cut with as little as 40% vermiculite or wheat straw to get the texture acceptable for use as a bulk substrate material.

so I threw out alot of what I had and added a LOT of verm.  Its spongey-ish.  My meter reads 100%, but no matter how hard I squeeze, I dont get a drop, though it does pool slightly between my knuckles.  Should I just try going with this?

I am hydrating a piece of coir right now to see what consistency it needs to be.  Im thinking from what you are saying, that my sub is just too dense/dirt-like.

Very well.  Hydrate until you get a drop or two when squeezed, then go.
