Do I need to remake these jars?
    #24913241 - 01/14/18 11:01 AM (7 years, 3 days ago)

There's a few burst grains on the outside of all the jars?

I didn't do this the first time, but I seem to be doing something wrong.

Process:
1. Remove sunflower seeds by floating and straining.

2. Rinse 2 more times

3. Pour boiling water on grains, leave for 90 mins

4. Drain and rinse 3 times

5. Place quarter cup verm in jar. Then fill 3/4 with wbs

6. PC 90 mins at 15 psi

If anyone can tell what I'm doing wrong let me know.

Nah they are fine.  Going from cool to hot very quickly by the pouring of boiling water over the cool seed is most likely the culprit.  Bring the seed to a simmer (180-190F) for a few minutes then strain the seed.  Slowly bringing up the seed in temperature discourages the bursting.

Thanks hamloaf, you are a wealth of knowledge. So I don't need to let them sit for 90 minutes? They get hydrated enough just by a few minutes boil? (And the pressure cook)

Correct.  Don't bring them to a full boil, though.  With WBS, if force hydrating with heat, a slight "simmer" (180-200F) for a minute or two won't burst the millet while being enough heat to force hydrate the hardy grains (milo and wheat) as well.

Edit to add.  Using the simmer step, the seed wil still need to be strained.

And what about the PC? Is 90 mins too long or it's good?

Took me awhile to figure that out on my own. Lol
