This is the first I've seen fruit bodies do this and my guess is that the sub is just too dry. Am I right?

Doesn't look dry , I see lots of water droplets on the surface- is that from misting or is it dialed in like that?

I've been having to mist it because I can't get it dialed in properly to save my life. I'm referring to the way that one fruit in the middle looks like it's growing out of an older skin of itself. Like a lizard molting. I hope that makes sense.

Try to tighten the bottom poly so the surface droplets start to dry up just in front of the holes- it shows you're at the max FAE you can allow without drying things out

Ok I'll try to get them tighter. They're pretty tight as it is, I think it might be a combination of living in the climate I'm in. Super dry.
Never seen a mushroom do that though?

Yea they do that sometimes. Can be environmental or genetic. Sometimes from being too wet too even

I would say the substrate is soaked actually. Pick it up it will feel heavy/dense
If you mist too Much you will kill the surface and it will look dry often so you'll mist even more and make the problem worse

Mycelium will form a into a hardened mat if the substrate's moisture content was prepped erring on the dry side or if the substrate lost too much moisture during spawn run. No amount of misting or dunking will save it at that point. If the myce sounds like water is being sprayed onto a sheet of plastic when misting, then mycelial dehydration is the culprit.

I think this is what happened. It does almost look like a solid mat instead of colonized coir. I think it lost too much moisture when I put it into fruiting conditions because I didn't dial the tub in correctly and I had to leave town for a couple days for new years :/
Hopefully we're wrong and I can still get something out of it.
Thanks for all the help
