Agar cobweb or mycelium /w pics
    #24906781 - 01/11/18 11:43 PM (7 years, 5 days ago)

Hey guys, I have a couple of agar jars with cottony growth on it. They are golden teachers. I am suspecting that the growth is cobweb mold. The growth isn't super fast and has recently stalled as well. Took about 9 days to get here. There is also growth on the walls of the jar. What do you guy think?

What sort of spore vehicle were you using? Syringe or plain old print? Nine days is an awful long time for spores to get going but is not unheard of. I like to use plain white rice as a sort of agar substitute as it works pretty much the same. I have never used agar so I would not know but if there is growth on the walls then I suspect it is something worth transferring.

That's cubensis mycelium. Transfer yesterday. And no, 9 days is not a long time for spores to germinate and colonize to that degree; germination alone can take weeks sometimes. And there is no way that white rice works the same as agar. I'm not sure why he would say that, especially since he admittedly has never used agar- bizarre. I hate to say it, but i suspect this is how he ended up with the low rating

all looks like cube myc to me.  Next time, you should try to use a tiny drop (inoculation loop comes in handy here) so that it only germinates in the one spot you  put it (like in the center), and then you can see it all grow from the center.  Its easier to spot contams this way with agar imo.

My first agar dishes all looked like that.  Most of them came out good, but it was a lot harder to spot contams than when I did it the aforementioned way. Looks good though. If the part on the bottom with the few circles is what you are worried about, cube myc can be very light sometimes and look like cobweb, but cobweb will take anything over very quickly.  Those spots are gonna be nice and white soon, like the other spots.

Thanks for the feedback guys! I just checked on the jars right now and one of them has started to show a bluish tint. I wonder what it could be. In any case I will try to transfer as I am a newbie and it will be good for learning! Also probably not the place to ask, but I also have a Honey Liquid Culture going and was wondering whether I can place a drop on agar to check whether it is clean and also for more agar plates? As always, any feedback is much appreciated!

Yes, infact, this is how you always should check your lc if you arent sure about it.

But im guessing that your lc was made with spores.  Its much better to make lc with agar because you know what your transferring is clean.  Also is much faster.

Also, you might want to consider trying a grain water lc.  I used Josex's LC Tek unfiltered grain lc and never went back.  I got explosive growth compared to the karo/honey lcs that I made and its so thick.  Also i like that it holds onto the grains, and gives the myc something to grip up.

I and many others have still had sucess with sugar based lc though.

Make sure you use only a tiny drip of that lc on the agar.

Good luck!

Hey, thanks guy! I will get on the lc on the petri asap. And I will put up more pics tomorrow, but the on the agar, some orbs/spheres have been forming. The size ranging from really tiny to the biggest one about 2mm. They are perfectly spherical. At first I thought it was just condensated water, but then I tried shaking and tilting the jars and they wouldn't budge. Seriously weird. You guys ever face what I am talking about?

By the way, I was super excited today to see that my spawn that I just used the LC i mentioned, inoculated with agar, 6 days ago were about 75% colonized.. My jars inoculated with sugar based lc usually take 2-3 weeks to get to that point :ooo:

Also, I know exactly what you are talking about, but I dont think I really got an answer. I guessed that it just had something to do with it being started with spores.

See my thread here: Small seperated sphere-like growth in LC 4871719/page/1

I believe the growths are on the agar and not the lc

from my pic? I started it with spores, it was before I started using agar.  I still have it, and it still looks the same

Lol, I skip through sentences sometimes and just assume I know what im reading. ADD...  Anyway, are you talking about where you made the transfer? If its white, its probably mycelium.  When you put a piece onto the agar, the mycelium usually looks like a small orb until it starts growing out horizontally.  Mycelium grows spherically when given a 3 dimensional area to grow.

Thats why you see circles form on the side of grain jars.  If you move it around, you will see that its really a semi-sphere. Maybe imperfectly, but it grows in all directions, which results in a sphere-like growth.

Pics would help too though.

Hi I am Sensualsensuality and hello friend! Unfortunately words have failed to describe what it is that I am trying to convey. As such I have used a photographing device to photograph the scene. I will now try and post said photographs so that readers will be able to point their eyeballs at the graphs of the photo. Thank you and hi I am Sensualsensuality.

Hi I am Sensualsenusality and take care!
