PLEASE HELP: Bottom/Side pins, nothing on top
    #24905491 - 01/11/18 01:28 PM (7 years, 6 days ago)

I've been fruiting 2 monotubs for about a week, no pins on top but it looked like there may be some small ones on the side, so I flipped it over and found some nice pin sets on the bottoms of both my tubs.

I think my issue is humidity (I've been on the struggle bus, having to heavily mist and fan 1x a day due to drying), so when I found the bottom pins, I taped one of my top holes shut (was lightly poly-filled), misted, and placed some parchment paper on top (US if that matters, I hear parchment paper here is closer to wax paper)

Will this suffice so I can get some top pins? I thought about flipping my cake but read that probably isn't a good idea.

Also, how long per day do I leave the parchment paper on top?

I've also thought about putting a humidifier (warm steam kind) in the room with my tubs to bring up the ambient rh. Thoughts on this?

Btw, sides are taped, bottom is not. 12/12 light cycle with 5000k bulb.

It means your surface conditions are not ideal. The substrate is putting up fruits along the side/bottom where there is a microclimate they find more favorable.

Forget about wax paper and humidifyers.

In a typical monotub with 6 holes stuffed with polyfill, you can adjust the amount of FAE by tightening or loosening the polyfill.
The top two holes get stuffed very loosely while the bottom 4 very tightly to start.
I like to see a layer of tiny water droplets across the surface. I want to see the droplets start to dry up directly in front of the bottom holes but no further- that tells me I'm letting in the most FAE I can without drying the substrate out

If the surface gets too wet and water starts to pool I loosen the poly some, if the surface is drying out, I tighten up the poly (and supplement with some misting until it gets back on track.).
This is what people mean by "dialing in" their tubs.

Thanks. I think I am going to remove the wax paper when I get home and try stuffing my poly tighter. Hopefully I get some fruits on top (and bottom!)
