Coir layer vs no coir layer
    #24904044 - 01/10/18 09:05 PM (7 years, 7 days ago)

So I started these at the same time with the same grade of spawn and type. The one photo showing growth just starting is the one I put a layer of coir on the top of when i first made the tub the other is without the layer. Is it contaminated? Or does it just look aweful usually when you mix the entire tub without a top level? Is it ready to double tub?

You could probably have spent more time fixing the top layer hehe the whole point is to create a nice and even surface for pins. Also it´s just a tad too thick for my taste, but looks like full colonization and it´s time to allow them to fruit (which they will anyway when they feel like, dub tubbing is not gonna signal anything to the organism in terms of any decisions the organism makes) Some new growers seem to think that the organism starts producing fruits when "fruiting conditions" are introduced, but the most important fruiting condition for the organism is full colonization, not dub tubbing, not loosening poly nor flipping lids.

Casing is not a requirement for cubes...I would have just left the casing layer out

Yes, I like to cover the substrate surface just enough so that I cover all the white spots, but thin enough that mycelium can colonize it easily without effort. Mycelium should be just beneath the top layer, 4-6mm something like that. I´m sure someone else does it differently with also great success. I´m just explaining my experience
