If one were to attempt and grow a mycorrhizal mushroom, what wpuld your steps be?  I was thinking get some oak saplings and plant them in coir been and add spawn.  What you think?

That sounds feasible.  Consider keeping that outdoors, as well.

I discussed this here with a skilled hand a while back. He told me that my proposed method has already been done. I've not done it myself and doubt it would yield commercial quantities.

Match the mushroom and tree species (e.g., chanterelle and birch). Then plant the youngest sapling possible in a pot of colonized spawn. Use fresh spawn generated from backup cultures for each repotting. Then plant the tree outside in fresh spawn and wait. It might take some years.

I did a couple failed experiments where I tried to transfer wedges of germinated MycoGrow spores to plant tissue culture plates. Micropropagation is kind of difficult compared to mycology. Don't get discouraged.

Bear in mind that much research concerns endomycorrhizal fungi that grow inside plant roots, while many gourmet species are ectomycorrhizal fungi that grow around plant roots.

You might want to experiment with species such as giant puffball that associate with ubiquitous plants like grass. I can imagine a puffball patch "cased" with grass seed producing some yield.
