Fuzzy feet and dunking
    #24903102 - 01/10/18 01:09 PM (7 years, 7 days ago)

I have looked and looked with no luck. It seems many people are split on the "twist & pull" harvest method, or cutting as close as possible to the sub leaving stumps.

As a noob, I've tried both. And now I have some questions.

I am correcting my fc by adding more holes. I need better air exchange since I was having issues with fuzzy feet and stems.

I was stupid and did not dunk my colonized spawn (rye berries) before mixing into my sub. After the first flush I dunked my trays for two hours and emptied all the water.

Since they had fuzzy feet, the stumps inevitably had fuzz around them. After the dunk, the fuzz became translucent, and slightly yellow. The rest of the tray looks fine. Smells fantastic.

Some pins that are further along (about 2 inchs or so tall, not close to maturity) had fuzzy feet, and appeared to stop growing for two days. I left them with hopes a dunk would help out, the tray did feel pretty light. After the dunk, the fuzz looks the same as the translucent stump fuzz. I picked one of those pins, and the fuzz was like a sponge. Squeezed it and water poured out (not the mushroom, the fuzz).

I did not use tap water, but purified water I already had on hand. I figured why not.

Now, some of the mushrooms have wet caps. Waterlogged? This only happened after dunking, and never before. My rh has been around 95. I looked between the space of the sub and tray, and there is no standing water in the tray. I drained them pretty good.

The yellowing I assume are metabolites? I read somewhere that mycelium will release metabolites, as well, to help aid in digesting compost?

Regardless of the wet caps and funny looking fuzz, after dunking last night they had some massive growth. I did however have plenty of aborts following the dunk an hour after draining the dunk water. Not a major loss by any means.

Opinions on everything stated above would be great for this noob. If you have any sources I can read to better my understanding, please share.

But the main question is this. If you decide to cut and not twist and pull, and there was fuzzy feet before harvest, leaving the stumps encircled with the fuzz, do you still leave the stumps then dunk, or would you remove them with the fuzz before dunking?

Thank you in advance!

As long as my fc provides adequate fae, is it safe to assume the sub will suck up the water soaked in the fuzz? And for the mushrooms that currently have soaked fuzzy feet, will this promote waterlogged mushrooms?
