Long time lurker - I'm nearly a half century old and never tried shrooms. After listening to Mckenna on youtube, I've decided it's time to give it a go.
I started following the board about three months ago and decided to try Bod's SAF systems.
I purchased nearly $300 in supplies and got to work.
Making Agar was SAF. Pouring plates was SAF, Making a SAB was SAF, OAT's were SAF and even Coir was easy but a pain in the ass to saw because my Coir cubes were way too big.
My first attempt at Agar was textbook. 20 plates poured, I inoculated them with a B+ spore syringe from one of the Shroomery sponsors and only had one develop any contamination.
I used these agar plates to inoculate two dozen quart jars of Oats. Most of them are at 90% and I just transferred a few to Choir Bulk about a week ago in shoeboxes and should have my first pins any day.
My second attempt at agar has me wondering where the F I went wrong. 20 plates poured and all but four were contaminated.
I have no idea how this happened. I live in a newer house, everything is super clean, I wore gloves, a mask, I used alcohol on everything, I sprayed the air, I wiped down my SAB, I flamed my x-acto blade till it was glowing red. This agar was doing fine in the fridge, but as soon as I did this agar to agar transfer something went array. See the results below.
Any suggestions to how I could have done this and what the brown stuff is that I'm growing?

Anyway, Thanks Bod for getting me started in an extremely interesting hobby. I actually look forward to coming home each day and seeing what's new in my dishes, jars and tubs.

Hmm. Was the air near your work space recently disturbed? I know I go as far as to vacuum before I'm going to be doing anything inside the SAB, but always let the air settle for a couple hours because of the strong gusts the vacuum itself pushes out.
Are you using 70% iso? Any other ratio is going to be inferior at killing bacteria.

You can put your sab on a table wait 30 seconds and go to work. Air doesn't take a hour to settle. I use the SAB because the room isn't clean. Vacuuming the room is moot. Your don't want any of the room being a problem vacuumed or not.
The first few times you do agar work expect contamination. You cant pick up a guitar and play a song start to finish no matter how much natural talent you have you still need to develop the skill.
At least you see the contamination and avoid it at the cheap and easy beginning of the process.
Make sure your hands never go above the open dishes.
I have some videos that might help too have you watched the videos ive made of myself doing SAB work?

I had this issue also, and for me the culprit wound up being the HVAC system kicking on while I was working. Conveniently, one of the vents blew right into my SAB area. I always make sure to cut the system off before doing SAB work now. I hope you figure it out!

Nice thread title. This is how to do a first post right.
You should instead watch Roger Rabbit's excellent videos on growing mushrooms: http://www.mushroomvideos.com/
These videos will teach you how to do it right, especially as a beginner. These are nice easy methods that will allow you to grow quality mushrooms with a minimum of effort.
Working with agar is something that should be done after you've had some experience with the basics.
