Easy one piece metal lids
    #24900311 - 01/09/18 09:45 AM (7 years, 8 days ago)

One piece metal lids

What you'll need:

1) Metal lid and band

2) Painters tape

These work great for LC and 1/4 pint no pours.

Is the tape just to make the two piece lid easy to open?

Not a bad idea, and I may just try it with the half pints a grabbed the other day. I am becoming a quick fan of unmod lids.

for grain jars and pf tek you will still need a hole and filter for gas exchange.

Isn't the point of an unmodified lid to allow GE? I have three rye jars colonizing right now with unmodded lids, but not tightened down. If I am mistakenly crazy, it's probably best I know now!

with plastic ones? They get loosened up to allow it. not sure how that will work with the 2 piece lids.

try it and post results. then we will know

My lids are one piece repurposed lids, and not from mason jars. I will be posting pics in the next day or two of my colonizing rye jars, in my grow log.

Using unmodified grain jar lids was simply a leap of faith based on the research I did around here before beginning any kind of cultivation effort. It is also an effort to maintain true sustainability in my efforts, which foil and plastic have thus far "foiled."

Yup, just something to hold it together while working. Not really a one piece lid in the conventional sense, just a cheap and easy trick that might help a few folks when working.

Unmodified metal lids (gasket side up as pictured) work for most things (grain, liquids, no-pour). YMMV of course.

hmmmm! Good stuff anyways. I might have to try some. I have a fuck load of metal lids. I wonder what other tapes you could use to hold them together besides painters tape.

you could even silicone the pieces together if you wanted. for a more permanet lid

I imagine any tape would work. I just like painters tape because it doesn't leave a residue and is easy to remove.

There is a TEK from a few years ago that details using silicone to make the metal lids one piece. I haven't tried it, but seems like it would work.

I think there was actually some conversation about using unmodified metal lids. When the plate is upside down it essentially works like a plastic lid. Probably much safer if the plate and ring are attached somehow because if you know the ring off the whole lid will be gone.

I am not sure where I saw that, but I'll see if I can find it

Didn't find it, but that wouldnt exactly be an unmodified lid anymore...

Good idea for using metal lids/band with polyfill filters- I hate having to try to squeeze the band to pick up the lid together. Can't believe I never thought to do this!

My flipped unmodded metal lids went bad at around 2 weeks (mold)

Recently I've been removing the ring entirely. Just lifting the lid up. I do metal lids rubber side down with polyfil. To break the seal I just twist the lid in place if it really doesn't want to come off I use flamed sterilized hemos.

I really love these plastic "autoclaveable" lids you get from cultivation sites (I think they're nicer than the Ball/Kerr brand you get for canning jars).
I either pop a SFD underneath or stuff with polyfill.

Plastic lid with polyfill is a fantastic + cheap lid

:nodofunderstanding:

Hard to argue with polyfills success in cult.

I've also recently given a spin to an idea that Mushboy uses for lids. A layer of Tyvek and 2 layers of MP tape on top. Seems to work pretty good. Could still benefit from using painters tape to keep it together when working.

When I was a noob I did lids that way. Upside down lid silicone into the band. I've moved away from all those lids. I even tried once to silicone the lid to the band the correct way. But then you can't unscrew the lid at all since the rubber seal in the lid cant turn against the glass well.
