after 4 weeks of beautiful colonization this jar (almost fully colonized) developed these spots which are bluish/grey in color. is this mold? is the jar salvageable? FYI..We have had some rather cold weather for our area and i had put the jars on a baking rack an inch above a heating pad at night as it was in the upper 60's inside the house. was this a mistake?
Thanks for any input. This is my first attempt and i have two other jars that are not as far along as this one was. do i separate them?

Looks like contamination or blue mold. I'm new at this so definitely get other opinions. I'm not sure if that's bruising or not. Check the gallery, they have a contamination one. I can't speak to whether or not your attempt at heating caused this.

Give it a couple days, see what happens. Higher temps can help contams, not really possible to say if your heating pad caused the problems. But, in general, they're frowned upon.

Heating pads works only on contact...
Temperatures are not cause of contamination, improper sterilization, procedures or dirty sirynge more likely

Thanks..I’m thinking the same. I removed this from the others and am going to watch it a few days. It’s sucks as it was soooo close.

I do think the pad may have been the issue. I had a data logger on the surface of the rack that the jars were on and the temp at the suface of the rack which would be the bottom of the jar it got up into the mid 80’s

I responded to another post before seeing this one. Thank you for getting back with me. On the real cold nights I covered that rack and jars with a light blanket. My data logger showed the temp in the mid 80s. Probably a mistake? Even so, you are right . Very well could have Been some mold spores in the bottom of the jar that I missed when sterilizing the jars.
