Agar wedge size and colonization speed
    #24898732 - 01/08/18 03:07 PM (7 years, 9 days ago)

I've noticed when knocking up quart jars with agar cultures that the mycelium sits on the agar wedge until it is completely colonized before moving on to the grains. Is it better to use a small agar wedge so that the myc moves to the new food source faster?

Bigger wedge = more mycelium and surface area to knock up jar, slower to move to grains, colonize jar faster?

Smaller wedge = less mycelium and surface area to knock up jar, faster to move to grains, slower to colonize entire jar?

Does it even out in the end?

Is this what you do?  I tried it a few times and they all just stuck together. I work with a SAB so I only open the jar once to knock up.

I do 2 quarter wedges. Give a little shake to bury them.

I just drop the wedge and try to bury it a little. I usually use a quarter plate per quart jar. Its fast enough

I use 1 full agar plate cut up into as many little pcs as i can, it's almost the same as liquid inoculant,
Then i shake up grains very very well so as to even get the lose mycelium on the agar dispersed

When you have agar that looks like this why not ?
