Used non wide-mouth jars, what should I do?
    #24898896 - 01/08/18 04:09 PM (7 years, 9 days ago)

I’m fairly new to mushroom cultivation, I’m currently in my first grow, I used verm + BRF and sterilized, but I used half pint jars (non wide mouth, I bought the wrong kind of jars) but anyways, the mycelium is currently growing great, and it’s almost to the bottom of the jars, so I assume about 1- 1/2 weeks before I have to dunk them, but since they are non wide mouth jars should I rehydrate them via dunking then take them out of the jars? And let the cakes sit in my fruiting chamber? Or should I leave the tops off after dunking? And if I should put the cakes in the fruiting chamber is there any precautions I should take? I’m just worried it won’t grow as well due to the jars being too deep since they are not wide-mouth jars, and it would ruin the growth of the mushrooms

I am just getting my first verm/BRF jars colonized at the moment as well.

From what I have read, there are a couple of options.

1. Carefully break the jars open to release the cakes.
      a. Then fruit the cakes in a FC like normal.
      b. Spawn them to bulk.
2. Fruit them in the jars.

If there are other options, I would like to know as well. I am in the same predicament with a couple of the jars I used. Currently I'm planning on using the narrow mouth jars to spawn to bulk when they are ready, but if there is a better way, it would help me as well.

Good luck on the fruiting!

Do you know if I could use brf+Verm to make a substrate again and use that as bulk substrate for it? I know brf+verm is susceptible to contamination in bulk, but if I added a contamination layer to the top similar to the way I did with the jars it would work?

I’m unaware of anyone using brf/verm as a bulk substrate. I’m guessing you could, but it would probably be pretty expensive to use that much brf when you can pick up a brick of coir for $2-$3

Here is what I would do take a clean knife and cut them into 4 rqual sections and the just pull them from the jars dunk rolls and pop in sgfc on foil on there side they will bruise but u will be fine u could spawn to bulk but ur yield is likely to suffer and it will take longer or just break the jars that works too

Do you think if I got some tupper ware I could make like a substrate for each and put it in each container? I’m just wondering the best way, I’m just nervous of contamination because I haven’t had one contam yet

I over bought brown rice when I first did it so I have a lot of bags, and could only find a large bag of verm, so I have a lot of verm and brf

I think fruiting them as cakes will provide the best efficiency for your BRF, but then again I haven’t really heard of anyone doing BRF much differently so what do I know

I would consider buying coir if you wanna do bulk, and maybe break those jars if necessary to get the cakes out- then next time use the wide mouth jars. If you have a ton of verm and brf you could continue to make cakes for ages rather than sacrificing a ton of it to make a bulk sub that may or may not get contaminated

But if you wanted to expiriment I’d be interested in seeing your results
