What is this pump/drain?
    #24897071 - 01/07/18 05:47 PM (6 years, 21 days ago)

I really dont want to ask my landlord to come by because I dont feel like moving everything I have out right now.

My house has been smelling like shit when I put the heat on--well more like rotten eggs.  I traced it down to the area where the ac unit is.  My room is in the basement, adjacent to the appliance closet that has all this, which is adjacent to my grow room.

The smell is coming from the hole filled with water pictured.  Its got a diameter of about 2.5 feet, I would say.  When I first traced the smell back, the lid was partially off, so I put it back, but there is still a hole in the top that lets the smell out.

It seems like there is stagnant water in there, but I see a pump.  Is there always supposed to be water in, or is the pump maybe broken, or maybe the water level is not set low enough?

I was thinking about pouring a bunch of water down to see if it starts pumping it, and maybe dilute the stank while im at it...Does this seem like a good idea?

The green is comet powder I just put on it.  I also poured some diluted liquid bleach down the hole.

Never mix cleaners.

Bleach and comet shouldn't be mixed.

If you are renting - move your shit, or cover it up, or find boxes to wrap around it to make it look like a stack of cardboard boxes.

You could be dealing with numerous different hazards here, least of may be the one you created mixing cleaners in an enclosed environment.

Deal with your grow, then get ahold of your landlord.

I would rather live in a safe healthy home and plan a later project than risk everything for something that takes such little time and money to accomplish.

But the comet said "with bleach".  I poured water into the hole and it seemed like the pump went on for a second but it was shooting water from above, back onto the lid. I couldnt see where it came from though.

It is your rental/family/grow, I just gave you my opinion. Do with it what you will.

Be safe and god speed.

I don't see why bleach and comet couldn't be mixed safely. Mixing bleach and hydrochloric acid is of course a different matter, as that will release chlorine gas.

What is it that the pump is supposed to pump to, i.e. what goes in and out of that hole in terms of drains and tubes? Where do they trace to? And if you trace the wiring of the pump, what drives it? This will help you to figure out what the pump is for and test the unit. Maybe there's a float switch in the sump somewhere that sets off the pump. These can get stuck and maybe all that is needed is to clean it so it gets unstuck.

That is a Sump pump.  https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sump_pump
They make many different versions and horsepower. If you feel like its no longer working you can go get a new one from any hardware store or plumbing supply house for a relatively low price, A lot cheaper then calling a plumber. Most sump pumps pump the water to the outside of the house as its illegal in most places to have it pump into the sewer system, with that said you probably live where its cold as fuck right now along with most of North America. If where the pump is day-lighting the water to outside of the house is frozen then its all just going to backflow right back into your house and cause the pump to go off again. If your not willing to fix this then your best bet is to move your grow somewhere away from where the people who will come will see it.

BTW the rotten eggs smell could be a gas leak in your house... You said you only smell it when the heat is on. Natural Gas smells like rotten eggs because when it is produced they add a chemical called mercaptan so that the gas can be detected... I would stealth your grow and call someone ASAP if you believe your not capable of troubleshooting and fixing these issues on your own. Good luck man.

Mercaptan doesn't really smell of rotten eggs, in my opinion. Rotten egg smell is typically H2S (hydrogen sulfide). It's a common byproduct of rotting/stagnant waste water, which is a much more likely source given the situation OP describes.

It's iust wise not to throw any cleaning solutions together willy nilly. Thats all I was getting at. Bad practice to get into.

But yeah. Looks like a sump. Its just generally the land lords job to fix crap like that, not yours, they cost upwards on 100 dollars or more and if you screw up the install and end up with water damage thats grounds tonget thrown out.

If you live in a cold area like I do your outside line could be frozen. I generally have to disconnect my outside output hose and thaw it in the tub once or twice a winter.

Thanks for the info.  Ive had a gas leak before, I can tell the difference from this.  Acutally, I dont have gas here anyway, its all electric.  For now it stopped smelling after I put the bleach in it.  If it starts smelling again, i guess I will have to move everything and call them.  Maybe I can just lock off the extra bedroom.  I dont want to touch the thing again, it smells like shit lol.

Condensation..    Just wipe up the mess, put a towel down and replace twice a day.

Unless you live where it's not cold.  Then nevermind.

Yes hydrogen sulfide is what your smelling. Caused by the stagnant water. The sump pump isn’t functioning for one reason or another. Bad float switch/valve, clogged drain pipe or the pump itself.
Check the electrical to the pump first. Make sure it’s getting current. If it checks out. Move to the float switch. Manually lift it If it’s a mechanical valve. If it’s electric you’ll have to test it with a voltmeter.
If all that’s working properly the it’s a clogged pipe which can happen since they do pick up a lot of dirt and bugs in them at times depending on the diameter of the pipe. If all else fails, call a professional of course but should be easy enough to fix yourself. Might be a good time to check your AC unit to see if it needs cleaning if that’s indeed a condensation tank/pit. Best of luck

Edit: haha sometimes I forget others are in winter. No such thing where I live. Well I doubt your running your AC but assuming that’s it purpose still. That water has been there a while. Just drain it a clean up. H2s can be dangerous.

Fuck the pump. Not your place, not your problem, don't fuck with it. Bust out your wet vac and suck the sump out. Report the problem after your done with your project.
