I'm stuck in the middle of nothing but farm land. I don't have any idea where I could get bulk sawdust around here, but I can buy straw by the hay rack full all day long, and for like $3 a bale. I may be able to get grain hulls from the local grain elevator that grinds and mixes various feeds. I could see then having it as a byproduct.
Rice hulls are usually pretty easy to come by.

I can get rice hulls for days, or as I like to call them, dirty toenails. I use them for brewing as a filter aid, and I hate cleaning them out of the false bottom! I'd probably never use them for cultivation simply because I hate them soooooo much.

do you lay them in, run water over them til it runs clear then proceed. depends on the system but if you can manage to lay a bed down and wet it first they work great but stick to the screens. not as big as a hassle as trying to just put them in the first when doughing in or mix with the grain but they don't work as well that way

Usually we just mix with the grain or even omit them because with the system we're using it isn't really necessary like it was on the old system. When we do our rye ipa or anything that has over 40% wheat in the grain bill we lay a bed first. Nobody likes a stuck mash.
Right now we're using a ruby street 1bbl system, which was a huge upgrade from the owner's 20gal blichman homebrew setup that was used before I started working there. Me and the head brewer are hoping to win the corn hole comp at cbc this year and win the 3bbl system (not sure what brand, fingers crossed for ss brewtech).
To sum things up, I work at a brewery that was opened by people with mostly homebrew experience. The head brewer used to work at freestate as an assistant but that's the extent of previous professional experience. Probably would've learned quicker working at a more established brewery, but this way I get to be involved in every aspect of the brewery.

Here is a shoebox in a mono and a 64QT mono.
The agar plates are serbica about to go to grain tonight.
Then there are some pint sized, LGT clone cakes I rolled a bit ago.
