2-3.5 microns according to the net...I’m going with yes they are smaller than most commonly used filters in this hobby

Did you know in the hepa filters you use for flow hoods the average gap between fibers is way larger than 0.3 microns

The air space between HEPA filter fibres is typically much greater than 0.3 μm. The common assumption that a HEPA filter acts like a sieve where particles smaller than the largest opening can pass through is incorrect and impractical

I remember reading that not to long ago, right now I have 6mm hole in the center of the lid very tightly stuffed with polyfil and 4 layers of micropore tape, 2 on each side of the lid. The tape is of course tightly taped on pressing down the poly even further. This seems much more safe than just polyfil. And much more practical especially when it comes to shaking jars. I know this is not ideal but it´s the best I have at the moment.

Do you know of anyone who has success with UV sterilizers?  Seems like one could just run one all the time in one''s workspace to keep viable airborn contams to a minimum but I dunno, maybe spores are too resilient to be inactivated that way.

Micropore tape

Well I didn't measure the the pore sizes,
instead took a piece of tape and mounted it on a slide.
Hydrated some P. cubensis spores and with an inoculation loop
mounted them on the tape.
The gaps are huge comparing to cubensis spores, which are ~12-17µm.
I circled the fibers with individual spores sticked to them.
Sorry for the kinda crappy images, didn't put a whole lotta effort in it...

Question:
Is Micropore tape sterile? Can it be sterilized?
Answer:
3M Surgical tapes are sold clean, not sterile.

seems like micropore tape is a shitty choice for mushroom cultivation.

Remember, there's how a product performs, and there's what the manufacturers lawyers make them say about how it performs to prevent liability.

Micropore tape works pretty good to cover the holes on brf jars, but of course after sterilization, you couldn't take the tape off and use it again.  That's why they say it can't be autoclaved.  Also, if the pores are small enough to filter bacteria, then they're small enough for our use.RR

I use 2-3 layers of micropore tape on a 1/8-1/4 inch hole on my lids for grain spawn. I have no issues with contaminates unless I am careless. I go through thousands of jars a year and only buy a new box maybe twice a year. A total of 24 bucks for 24 rolls. I think it works pretty good.

Assuming it is actually aspergillus its still a toss situation. Aspergillus should theoretically be easier to salt tho. Say you put it somewhere outside to salvage rather than burying it.

yeah I salted it and tucked away somewhere outside, just to see how it develops. these blobs are fascinating. :cookiemonster:

just thought I'd update on this one...

it's fucking Blobtown Arizona!

I thought that the Aspergillus was spreading from under the salt, and whacked more on, but it looks liek it could be bruising from having the water sucked out?

either way it's a mess

and it's growing slowly as it's in a spot that is generally about 60 degrees f

It's pretty cool if nothing else. It's nice to know even with the contamination and low temps it's still producing.
