One method for WBS that i have come to love
    #24892888 - 01/05/18 09:10 PM (7 years, 12 days ago)

So I have tried many methods of preparing spawn, i have delt with bacterial contams, from over wet jars, i have jad jars dry out before full colonization, i have tried the add dry verm thing, ive tried it all.

Soo.. this is what i have been doing, a not about this though, you have to inoculate these jars within a few days of making, and i am innoculating with liquid culture, i dont know if spores will grow fast enough for these style jars.

So if you are using liquid culture, and have it made and ready to go, heres my method.

Clean wbs as usual, 5 gallon bucket, add warm water, stir it up, dump anything that floats.
Fill, dump, fill, dump, fill, dump, until water is relatively clear and grain is clean. At this point get a big pot, i use my pc, fill with water and put on high on your stove.
Turn your tap on hot as possible, fill bucket with grain, stir, dump, repeat, this is to preheat the grain as hot as possible.

Then fill with hot tap and let it sit until pot is at rolling boil.
Dump water out of 5 gal
Pour boiling water onto grain until its about 2 or 3 inches above, put remaining water back onto stove on high, stir seed for a few minutes, pour off water into second pot keeping grain in bucket, place 2nd pot on a burner on high, pour boiling water from pot 1 onto grain, again until 2 or 3 inches above grain, then pour water from pot 2 into pot 1 and stir wbs while that comes back up to rolling boil. Repeat this 3 or 4 times,

This cleans more junk and some starches out of the grain, and gets it hot enough to kill the grain so nothing sprouts on you if you cant pc right away.

After a few rounds pour all boiling water into 5 gal bucket with grain and stir for a bit. Refill large pot with more clean fresh water. Put back onto stove on high. Stir wbs a few times while the water is brought to a boil.

Right before water begins to boil dump water from wbs, and using warm water rinse and dump grain again until water runs fairly clear once more.
Use the hottest tap water again to raise temp of grain again
This time dump half the boiling water into 5 gal, stir wbs for a few minutes while remaining water continues to boil then pour the rest of the water into the bucket and stir.
Allow to sit overnight, or 12 hours, whichever works for ya.

Dump water, rinse grain until runs clean once more, then strain out all water. Just until it no longer drips.

Load into jars, i like to go a little heavy, about 3/4 full, you can go half, whatever you like.

Now i dont use ANY metal lid, i put 2 layers of tyvek on top of the jar, then push metal ring onto it and screw down tight.

I go pc happy, i pc at 15 psi for 2-3 hours. Bacteria are my enemy, ive done alot of research on pc and sterilization. 90minutes kills pretty much everything, but not all bacteria. Even 3 hours doesnt kill all bacteria but it does kill more.
Anyways, after pc looses pressure, using a towel, pull out each jar, shake for a few secs then set aside. Once cooled i use silicone 2 and put a nickel size spot right in the middle as a SHIP. once that is dried your good!

These jars dry fast! They are good for liquid culture because the excess liquid dries quickly so bacteria is kept at bay, and mycelium rips through these jars because they get good gas exchange.

Inject with liquid culture, i use 6ccs per jar because lc is always plentiful, shake well, after 2 days the jar is completely dry and spots of mycelium pop up, at this point i put aluminum foil over the top to slow evaporation.

These jars work AWESOME if used soon after being made, and with lc, no need to dry the grain after hydrating, thats always been the biggest pain in the ass to me because i can pressure cook 14 jars at a time so i make 40-50 jars at a time with lc and laying out and drying that much grain os almost impossible.
Plus theres no lids to get rusty, drill holes, have to clean, and the excess gas exchange really kicks bacterias ass.

My method of boiling water twices gets rid of ALOT of excess starchiness and really guarantees sterilization of the seed so it doesnt sprout on you if it takes a few days to get pc'ed.

The good thing about Fooman's tek is that it's very simple and fast. You can just put the WBS in a strainer and give it a good few "shakes" to make it drop it's moisture and load your jars immediately afterwards. Very quick, works very well

Yup I never wait more than 15 minutes after straining it. Always comes out perfect or slightly wet and shake it to redistribute the moisture.

From foomans was prep:

Quote:

After rinsing, you want the excess water to drain. I myself don't wait a half hour or anything for this step, I just shake the the strainer like a chef does on the cooking shows until I don't see more than a drop or two of water.

Once this is done, load up the jars:

I do not rinse grains. I steam dry them. Seems like a waste of time and like I mentioned I load them slightly wet. Most times the wbs comes out a nice cooked Brown from the pc thirsty for moisture.

Drying it out works it’s just a waste of time. You only need to dry it like that if you leaving it rolling boil for a while in which case it reaches full saturation quicker and will explode causing a mess. Fooman is about underhydrsting the grain until after the pc when it then soaks the remaining moisture.

I soak my WBS in 60-70C water for 1h, spread them out on a home made mesh, stir around every 5 minutes for 15 min and they get to that perfect spot in between dry and moist. After the PC I shake one time and after they cool down they are dry enough on the outside to to make the clink sound inside the jar and to individually fall apart but at the same time I KNOW that they are hydrated to the max.

try 30 minutes soak and load wet after 15 minutes in a colander/ screen. they still come out great and save you some time. i think this method is literally the fastest way to get wbs prepped for a pc run. /soapbox

I made some tests that show that colonization times increase as the hydration level increases. So basically itΒ΄s all about hydrating the WBS to the max. Idk if I would boil my WBS or pour boiling water over them. 60-70C for 1h seems to hydrate to the max with minimal burst grain. Also that quote is not recent, it was from Nov. https://www.shroomery.org/forums/showflat.php/Number/24824234
