Verm on base of shrooms safe to consume?

Is the vermiculite on the base of the mushrooms after I harvest safe to consume, or should I cut a portion of the base off? I tried using the search bar but I wasn't satisfied with the responses.

Unless you’re consuming it by the handful I doubt it would harm you. That being said I like to clean it all off because I already get nauseous from eating mushrooms. Don’t need any other indigestible material in my belly further encouraging the nausea. It’s also not fun picking it out of your teeth or scraping it against your asshole as you wipe.

If your drying them I dry them then pick it all off quite easily I can’t say I’ve ever been to worried and it’s done me no harm! I’m sure this isn’t much use and I hope somebody can give you a definitive answer. I’m sure most of us have eaten much worse than a bit of verm tho

Just brush it off it before you ingest, it will taste better without the verm but I don´t think you´re get sick from swallowing a tiny bit of verm, if that was the case plenty of people would be getting sick all of the time

I always just cut that part off and throw them in the dehydrator.. Brushing them off takes too long when harvesting a shit load of fruits

No..... Please, don't eat that. I use a sharp knife and flake it off little by little, kind of like sharpening the end of a pencil.... You will keep more of the heavy base of the fruit this way, instead of just cutting the whole end off with scissors.

It's been asked before.
But to answer your question: vermiculite is non-toxic. So don't worry about stray particles. I'd recommend you clean them off, though. Nobody likes rocks in their teeth.

To each his own...If you don't like the verm just pick it off or cut it off either way it's harmless...bit of an earthy taste.
I prefer my verm with some Fava Beans and a nice Chianti

OK, does the vermiculite commonly used in mushroom production contain asbestos?

Pretty sure it does not...that applies to vermiculite used for insulation pre 1990 I believe...
"A mine near Libby, Montana, was the source of over 70 percent of all vermiculite sold in the United States from 1919 to 1990. There was also a deposit of asbestos at that mine, so the vermiculite from Libby was contaminated with asbestos. Vermiculite from Libby was used in the majority of vermiculite insulation in the United States and was often sold under the brand name Zonolite. If you have vermiculite insulation in your home, you should assume this material may be contaminated with asbestos and be aware of steps you can take to protect yourself and your family from exposure to asbestos."

That's a negative, Ghost Rider. Asbestos is illegal all around the western world (Russia and India still use it, to name a few places). Asbestos contamination occurred in Zonolite-brand vermiculite insulation which sourced their vermiculite from a mine called the Libby Mine, where asbestos occurs naturally. This was discovered years ago and subsequently pulled from the shelves. So none of the vermiculite around now should contain any asbestos.
Also, asbestos is carcinogenic upon inhalation, so even if it did contain it, you'd have to be more worried about pouring the stuff rather than ingesting is. That said, most types of inorganic dust are bad for the lungs and possibly carcinogenic, so vermiculite dust isn't exactly healthy to begin with.
