psychotria viridis or psychotria alba?
    #21601753 - 04/27/15 12:28 AM (6 years, 7 months ago)

So I traded a really decent amount of rare/hybrid cacti seeds and seedlings here about 4-5 months ago for what was supposed to be psychotria viridis rooted leaves. After letting them grow out I now believe they are psychotria alba not viridis. Can anyone confirm this? I'm pretty disappointed...

A close up of underneath one of the leaves would help. Looks Alba though.

Pretty certain you've got Alba.

On viridis the leaf extends all the way to the end of the petiole.

A little something else, possibly helpful.

Well that's a bummer. Id really like to believe the person I traded with for these believed they were viridis and didn't knowingly lie about what he was sending me... So whats the deal with alba? Is it still a decent source of alkaloids or is viridis much better? I'm still happy to have it as part of my garden but id still like a virids

From what I've gathered, most of what is out there on the auction sites etc. is alba, even when sold as viridis, however, alba will still get you where you want to go, though it might take a bit more.  I've also heard that it grows faster anyway.

And hey I could be wrong man.

But yeah either way, it's a nice plant to have.

I'm not sure about the alkaloids. But I've heard it's pretty low, sometimes negligible.
Alba DOES grow a lot faster.
In fact I regret buying 4 of them, they're getting large and I'm running out of room.

:whathesaid:
Like Riparian said, intentional or not, most p viridis sold on the new is alba. But it's not a total loss. It's slightly faster growing, but also slightly weaker...

Also worthy to note- on the viridis, the veins are opposite each other, where alba has alternating veins. From what I've read, this is the most telling trait between the two.

Good call.
It's been a while since I've read about Alba/Viridis, I had forgotten about that.
Definitely a more efficient way to do it.

Dont Focus on the Vain pattern, The Key things to look at in order to tell if you have Alba is by looking at the leaves and if the leaf meets the stem you have viridis, if it finishes before you do not

also Alba has white flowers, viridis has green flowers, and the bottom of viridis where you see the vains looks almost like a spine is coming out

Im not so shure about this beeing an P.Alba.
P.Alba does have a bit of "stem" on the leaf where the leaf of P.Viridis starts at the base where the leaf attaches to the plant.

However, i have seen other pictures of both viridis and alba and usually the "stem" part of P.Alba are longer and more defined.
Like this, that supposedly is P-Alba:

If you compare the leafs in the picture above with the pictures in the original post in the top, then im not so sure.
On these leafs above the veins are some mix between alternating and opposite and these are said to be albas.
But i am no expert at this, you should get some oppinion of someone who knows these things for certain.

If you want do extractions, you want the P.Viridis variety i think.
I have heard and read P.Albas are no good and i have seen some comparison measurements of the 2, but it was so long ago i have not the links anymore.
But you can certainly find out by do some digging on the net.
Im sure there are some info on this as the viridis vs alba has been talked about quite much.

Good luck, i hope you have the P.Viridis variety.

Edit:
It seems probable this is an P.Alba.
After some searching about this the P.Viridis seems to look very much like shown in post 5 and the link in post 6.
Also the wayvy leaf edges seem to be a trait seen only in albas.
