Google to offer 1 gig of free e-mail
    #2488999 - 03/31/04 11:18 PM (19 years, 11 months ago)

http://www.cnn.com/2004/TECH/internet/03/31/google.email.ap/index.html
Its probably a big april fool's joke, but here it is anyways...

Quote:

MOUNTAIN VIEW, California (AP) -- Search engine Google Inc. announced Wednesday it will launch a free, Web-based e-mail service to compete against popular services from rivals Yahoo! Inc. and Microsoft Corp.

Google's service, called "Gmail," will include a built-in search function that will let people search every e-mail they've ever sent or received.

According to company executives, users will be able to type in keywords to sort e-mails or find old missives. And it will come with 1 gigabyte of free storage - more than 100 times what some popular rivals offer and enough to hold 500,000 pages of e-mail.

The service is being offered to invited users, and will be available to everyone in a few weeks, the company said.

Officials at Yahoo and Microsoft's Hotmail division declined to comment on Google's entry into a new category.

But analysts said that Google -- whose technology is behind nearly four out of every five Web searches -- could shake up the free e-mail market.

Yahoo dominates the niche, with 52.6 million unique users per month in the United States, according to a February survey by online research firm comScore Media Metrix. Hotmail is next, with 45.4 million users. AOL has 40.2 million paying users.

To finance the service, Google will display advertising links tied to the topics discussed within the e-mails. For instance, an e-mail inquiring about an upcoming concert might include an ad from a ticket agency.

Industry analyst David Ferris said Gmail is a logical extension of the world's most popular search engine. But he said Google may run into trouble if it tries to charge for e-mail eventually.

Rivals have kept stripped versions of e-mail free and asked users to pay annual fees up to $30 or more for extra storage and spam protection.

"I know that companies offering free e-mail are very frustrated because the consumer expects it will stay free -- they simply will not pay any money for them," said Ferris, president of San Francisco-based Ferris Research. "Although there's a clear tendency for these free services to offer for-fee extensions, users are very resistant to taking them up. The level of adoption is very disappointing."

It's also been reported on MSNBC, so it's either real or not a CNN-specific joke.

However, the context-sensitive advertising worries me.
I know none of my non-encrypted email is safe, but the idea of something that automatically reads every single one of my emails for content is creepy.

If they cap the individual message sizes and spam filter... i think would it work. Emails are just a couple kilobytes on average. It would be a long time till u reached that 1 GB mark.

No it is NOT an april fools joke - Gmail is as real as it can be! Only one problem - they are currently only offering Gmail as part of a preview release and limited test. But methinks this is going to be THE Free Web Based E-mail!!!

So you don't mind them going through your e-mails?

honestly how secure do you think hotmail or yahoo mail is? but yeah I read an article on this in my local newspaper just this afternoon...

I personally probably won't sign up or it, mostly because i enjoy m current email, and partially just cause I can only imagine how annoying the advertisements will be. The newspaper I was reffering to earlier put it something like this...

"Imagine reading an email from a friend about how he's been having bad heartburn lately and then seeing an advertisement for a brand name antacid."

Well, definitely can't predict the future.  If you had told me 5 years ago that 1TB drives would be easily obtainable and inexpensive, I would have been skeptical.

I use my gmail account when I think I might get spamed by giving my email address out
now I get 600 to 800 spam emails a day to that account
so even though my gmail account is semi public I'm glad I have it

oh man...

i was so against Gmail at first (and i still am reserving a big amount of paranoia regarding anything googlish) but it's the only mail that i use now...
a year ago or so my mom changed her ISP and with it my "official" Email address... i used to have a hotmail but that got killed after i haven't used it forgot about it and so on...

either way Gmail is just the best thing out there (except that it limits your real power by not allowing you the real important features for mailing lists and stuff like that, and no retrieving option can make and have made some problems for me)
i still use it for a mailing list but it would have been much better

it's also limited to Emails obviously in spite of the ever growing space they offer which makes some sense but helpfully would change someday... we'll look at this post in 4 years and see where we stand

one note though... many of the features that lack in Gmail are also complimented with other google apps, which makes for a problem eventually (they control all your data and make you dependent on their service, which i hope will forever remain free)
