GODSPEED YOU! BLACK EMPEROR

heard this when I was younger but I dont think i was old enough to appreciate it. Now.... wow absolutely amazing. Truly the gold standard of what an "album" is. This doesnt break into songs. There just big long musical journeys.
F# A# Infinity is my favourite. Especially since the vinyl ends on a locked groove making the record essentially never ending. I would tell you why thats the best part... but its better if you listen to the whole album and once you reach the conclusion you'll be sure to understand why its so poetic and beautiful.

I love F#A# infinity. Also I think lift your skinny fists and the slow riot EP are equally as good. Haven’t listened to the latest record yet. I like all their stuff I’ve heard but I definitely liked their first few records the best. I miss the weird vocal samples they used to use.

I haven’t heard it yet for some reason. I liked Asunder well enough but I just haven’t really been in a GYBE mood lately. I should change that. I’ve wanted to see them live for a while now but haven’t had the chance.
What about the new album did you not like?

I'm not sure how to put it exactly. it's just that godspeed like so many other artists have fallen into the self parody/formula trap where their music hasn't really changed fundamentally but the feeling just isn't there like it used to be... hard to explain, but when i saw them recently, the emotional charge wasnt all the way there even though they didn't actually get any worse. just wasnt as "hopeful" as seeing them when i was 17 and more idealistic. idk, that's a weird and personal rant, but yeah like you im less often in a godspeed mood lately. ill still love em forever.
i actually liked asunder and alleluia a lot too, which is more why i was disappointed with the new one. also, i feel like now is a time when the tone of their music is more relevant than ever to the global political landscape and it just didnt deliver for me.

Hmm, this thread reminded me to check out the new album, so thanks!
I definitely like all their stuff but F#A#, slow riot EP, and lift your skinny fists are all classic to me.
Yanqui was good but something about the way it sounds just doesn’t do it for me. I don’t know if it’s right to blame Steve Albini’s production job or not, but the sound just seems kinda dull to my ears and the epic crescendos don’t work as well. I love a lot of records albini has produced but I don’t think his style really suited GYBE’s sound.
On Asunder and alleluia I don’t enjoy the drone tracks very much. They are okay, but the drones on F#A# and lift your skinny fists were really compelling to me and much more evocative by comparison to the later records. The atmosphere on those early records is immense and easy to get lost in.
I get what you mean though about kinda becoming a self-parody. I’ll always like the post-rock sound probably but it definitely seems overdone at this point.

yanqui is their best in my opinion, definitely aided by steve's production also, that's where the quality of their composition peaked; they trimmed a lot of the fat from the earlier albums. don't get me wrong, i looove f#, slow riot, and lift your skinny fists, all classic albums, yanqui is just that much better to me.
as much as i do love alleluia and asunder, they really don't even come close to the early stuff. i don't think anyone ever expected they really would/could outdo the first few albums. i am definitely glad they got back together, tour, and continue to make music though, which is definitely not something i can say about most bands who reunite after a hiatus. seeing godspeed live is always an amazing experience, and i still get excited when i hear they're coming out with new music.

A very great friend of mine from back in the day shared quite a bit of post-rock with Me in My teenage years, Godspeed was one of them. Might wanna look into God Is An Astronaut, Mono, If Thousands...., Bosse, some Agalloch (although primarily black metal, some works are solely acoustic) & Explosions In The Sky if Godspeed You! Black Emperor is in Your playlist.

Also grab up some Mogwai for post rock more similar to GY!BE's sobering style. Do Make Say Think is maybe my favorite post rock band of all. Different stylings, but don't miss out on their work if you haven't heard them. Also props to Slint for taking some of the initial steps into this territory. Their teenaged 6 song epic Spiderland is a masterpiece and were it not for that album, this genre might not exist at all, or at least would be quite different.

Yeah Slint is definitely cool. And I’ve listened to lots of Mogwai. I feel like I’m in the minority but my favorite Mogwai album is definitely Come on die Young. I really like the post-rock band Grails a lot. Lesser known but Great IMO

Thanks for posting, I'll put them on my to listen to more list.
First impressions, they kind of remind me of the band “Mono”.
Have you ever listened to them? If not, you should check them out.
You might like them.

Was really into GYBE 9-8 years ago and it was number 1 when I was on drugs. That and Ratatat. F# A# Infinity is also my favorite.

Ohhh yeah Russian Circles are great. Saw them earlier this year and they were really tight. The drummer has all the hooks the guitarist is a master with his looper pedal.

I don't know the album or anything, but the Dead Flag Blues is one of my favourite songs.
Antennas to Heaven (apparently named after a GYBE album) is also very cool. Quite different but still quite similar. I'd recommend their album "The Line between Myth and Reality has always been in Finland".
