Say once your minitub (16 qt) is layer/mixed and ready to incubate.... do y'all cover the minitub in a garbage bag ( not around FAE vents) or just leave out?

So much controversy in this thread regarding to layer or not to layer...with cubes I’ve had success and little difference either way

What I do, and I believe is most common, is I put a lid on it and allow it to fully colonize before giving it FAE....but man I’m reading so many different opinions lately that I’m like, fuck..am I just old school or something?

Nature does not put them in a bag, nor does it deprive them of air. Remember we are trying to recreate natural conditions, with a few things manipulated in our favor, like knocking out competing mold and bacteria.

What do you recommend TMH420? Uncovered fully; no bag or lid?

When I use a lid it does have holes with polyfil to allow for GE

No bag. Lid. Light exposure.
The goal is to guard your substrates moisture content during spawn run, then evaporate it away during fruiting.

Right there!
They need air but not crazy air during colonization. They just should not be deprived. Most containers will allow enough air exchange via the imperfect fitting lid, but a bag over it could choke it.

I figured the same...just got a little confused when we were talking about keeping air away...FAE is a pin trigger so we probably want to limit that until the sub is ready but the sub still needs to breathe thus the polyfil holes in the lid...keeps moisture in and light GE flowing

There is no reason for polyfil in the lids in the 6qt tubs. I have 11 of them going right now and NONE are modified. Also many people put their tubs into fruiting conditions from the day they spawn. It will not fruit, regardless of FAE until it is ready. Full colonization and the evaporation are 2 main factors for pinning. You really should check out the link I posted. you will see that none of us put polyfil in the lid.

It’s just a personal touch I do for my larger tubs but I agree it’s not really a necessity.

What they said.
They tolerate high co2. But they're aerobic and want air. Their requirements are small compared to mammals lungs though. colonization conditions is way more about keeping the moisture content in before fruiting.
