Sweet thread bro, and keep up the good work! I have been curious about this very concept and hope to begin some aquaponic experiments next spring. I'm gonna have to piggy back off of your work here. I'm hoping to better identify the full life cycle of several riparian area mushrooms to understand exactly how habitat manipulation can be used to clean the environment.

Congratulations on your success!

The flood and drain system of AP actually does vary the humidity. If you were doing rafts without the drain, it would stay constant.

This is really innovative, Jackal.

For the heck of it, it sure does work, but I don't know if you can make it productive enough to be a good small commercial method of mushroom production. But maybe you can! I'll keep an eye on it and see what you do!

These below zero temps have really jacked up my greenhouse. Most things in the AP are okay, but I need propane heaters to keep the temps alright when it gets stupid cold like it's been. :frown:

The oyster mushrooms seem to do very well just with a humidity tent, flood and drain grow bed and venting of the CO2 by the air pumps used for the aquaponics. It did seem to get a bit too dry on the surface of the substrate, so this time covering the substrate tightly with plastic, and will add a few distributed holes to induce fruiting and keep the substrate moist. Below is a video that shows the latest iteration of the flood and drain grow bed and a DIY PC recently built. What seems really interesting to try next is inoculated logs buried in flood and drain grow beds.

DIY PC BUILD

Day 1, eight gallons of Grey oyster mushroom coffee grounds and straw bulk substrate inside flood and drain grow bed.

Cheers!

This is a close up of Grey oyster mycelium running after 18 days on an aquaponic flood and drain grow bed on bulk substrate of sterilized straw, coffee grounds, fish poop, fish pond water, and HWFP. Spawn from the most awesome Ryan L Palmer from the Mushroom Growing group on Facebook.

Day 18, three and five gallon buckets of King oysters in the oven!

New cover over the grow bed.

Cheers!

Hey Jackal,

I Suggest for future grows not letting the sub into the flood zone. It creates an anaerobic space. I have found best results just above flood zone. 1/2 to 1 inch.

The mycelium will send straws into the flood area and suck up as needed while the humidity soaks the substrate enough. Use something as a barrier as well so you can pull spent substrate or it will rot and clog. Cleaning out beds can be frustrating.

On the other hand you can compost directly into the bed. Add Red wigglers ( compost worms) as the mushrooms die stir the bed around and connect it to a swirl filter to capture solids. BSF will also eat spent mushroom spawn just not the straw or wood not converted enough. Add air line when composting this much protein. Start small as it will get nasty if it cant compost fast enough ( SUPER FISHY - TONS OF HOUSE/FUNGUS FLIES)

Further more, when you are growing, add an air line under the substrate at the bottom of the AP bed where the water always remains. This will increase oxygen under the oxygen hungry substrate. Yes the flood and drain of water pulls air but you will get less aborts and more of a carpet like flush. Leave the edges open to substrate as well About 2 inches length wise front and back. Extra air sucking down from flood and drain action on the sides with this method.

The best thing is moving air. The more oxygen the less competition from bacteria under substrate. It wont dry out because of the perfect humidity.

The sun is what keeps the stems short and fat. The caps are thicker as well. They are ready to harvest sooner, don't cut rip. (Less contamination more flushes with AP mushies)

Watch out for an orange contamination usually on the stem base. I don't know if this is bacteria or fungus nat larva poop. This means you did not harvest soon enough or your substrate is dying.

This is the hardest part of AP grows. You have a diverse environment. Any weakness is exploited and amplified over time as the new life learns to eat the mushrooms.

It absolutely adds filter, diversity of nutrients/food for AP environment microbes, and a better tasting/texture fruit when done correctly. The more sun the better! I am a full sun kinda guy. more vitamins!

I have been doing this for years and started growing mushrooms with aquaponics as soon as I started mushrooms.

My next step is commercial intergraded system. Building a 50ft Aquaponic Fruiting room Green house. Near Albany NY going for all year round growing.

I also plan on creating spent system that incorporates ponics fodder systems that feed the goats, drain over spent logs pack into the ponics. I will let bugs and everything into the system. I have chickens who will scratch up the spent pile for bugs and mycelium itself. They will eat the fodder and greens too. They will also poop in the system to feed it. They will drink from the trough after it is filtered to grow the fodder. It will do so much more too!

Don't ever be discouraged from creating and experimenting with environments. The observations and understanding is invaluable. We must bring together all forms of cultivating to use water and the cycle of life to its full potential. When we do this we thrive with diversity and get the most nutrients from our food while we enable our surrounding environments to thrive and heal.

You are on the right path Jackal! Keep going and keep growing!
