I'm thinking I haven't been making moist enough grains or maybe the temperature of my room is causing a stall. My last few batches of grain spawn have been perfect either than taking a bit longer than I would like them to to colonize. Maybe it's a moisture issue. They do look a bit dry. People always suggest bacterial contamination but this doesn't look like the case. I've seen enough contamination to know when things are going south. I guess my question is can too little moisture cause a significant stall in colonizing. Also it's usually about 70 degrees in my room.

Absolutely. That's why grain prep is important. Try inoculating dry grain

I feel like I knew the answer to that question. I just get so worried with all my past contamination. They do look a bit dry but somehow after slowly chugging alone they managed to colonize all the grain. I guess I just got paranoid while boiling that I would accidentally overdo it and shut it off too early. This time I'll just do the soak like I usually do.

I think one would REALLY have to under hydrate. I have been only going 25 min soak, in water that reached boiling, and have not had a to dry issue.

Getting impatient with my current less than ideal BRF grow. My 30qt tub is looking like it's probably toast (lots of metabolites on the bottom, top is looking 'tight' and isn't puffing back up after colonizing 60% of the surface), and the remaining 3 BRF cakes I am not optimistic about either. Problem is I started these from an agar plate inoculated from... an old untested plate I gave my friend from the last GT syringe I bought. Hoping for a single pin anywhere on these, ugh.
I finally have the equipment to do it properly (a real PC and 20lbs of WBS), I just need a new culture to start from. Don't put untested shit into production.

Does anyone here have serious skills with using spawn bags?
I've been struggling. I can't find the balance between overhydrated and underhydrated grain. It seems impossible to fully colonize a clean bag of spawn.
I just filled up my car with garbage bags full of failed bags to take to the city dump. so much wasted grain/electricty/water/time/anticipation...
I'm not all that bummed out about it, I've had some good success in the past, but moving forward, if there is some magic trick to make it work 90% rather than 10%, I want to know.
...I guess most just stick with jars because it's far easier to have success.
