Do spores jump to other agar dishes?
    #24884026 - 01/01/18 11:53 PM (3 years, 4 months ago)

Hello. I tried inoculating some petri with MS with some success. Some of my newly poured dishes had condensation so I sat them aside in the SAB. I'm looking at them tonight more than a month after pouring them and a couple look like they have mycelium starting to grow but I know I didn't put any drops of MS on them. They look a lot like a bunch of pics I've seen of mycelium. Can spores float around and slip into a petri dish? Or is there something wrong here? Will try to get pics tomorrow as it's a little late ATM.

Currently prepping some coir trying Bod's monotub tek..

I've never heard of or seen that. Probably mold, I'd say. Are they wrapped with anything? A month late is kinda strange.

If they weren't inoculated it's definitely mold, a lot do look fairly similar to mycelium until they're producing spores.

Sounds to me like mold spores got in during pouring.

definitely scrap and wrap. glad cling wrap is my favorite. it's cheap and works like a charm. just cut the roll into little rolls, wide enough to cover the edge of your petri. i wrap twice.

Thanks for the tip. I knew i should have wrapped them but purposely didn't..wish I had a good excuse lol oh well, lesson learned.

Also wasn't happy with my agar mix. Since then I have found a better recipe that is of the 'AF' variety.

and thirdly, I need to brainstorm a new spot in the house to do agar work.

wrap it up. There are some tiny little flies around which can make it through the gap and transport contamination from one dish to the other.

Interesting. I've always been more worried about mood spores being carried around in the air currents and temperature fluctuations and what not. But tiny little nasty petri fucking flies, it never ends.

You can do agar work anywhere if you do it in a still air box.
Whats AF agar?

Bodhi, AF=as fuck..as in easy as fuck. Funny thing, I was just trying to read one of your updated TEKs but I needed to have 10 posts to do so. This is number 10 lolz
I have a new spot picked out and donated a small dresser to hold all my mycology supplies. Will try another round tomorrow. I'll be following your agar recipe, pc and sterile technique/SAB TEKs. (also have whole oats on standby)
The grain(wbs inoculated with ms syringe) to spawn monotub is about 10 days in. I'll take a peek at it in a week or so.
Anywho, will continue to read and learn..and fuck shit up along the way and hopefully learn from my mistakes. Thanks for chiming in.
