Re-Dunk Slow Cakes?
    #24877842 - 12/30/17 12:47 AM (7 years, 19 days ago)

I'm doing PF Tek, and I had 3 cakes that were really slow to colonize. When they were finally fully 100% I waited three more days, then dunked all the cakes and moved them to the FC.  The three slow cakes just sat there while the rest went to town. Today I harvested the first flush from the other cakes and noticed that one of the three slow guys was finally starting to set pins.

I'm about to dunk the rest of the cakes. I assume at least one of the slow cakes has finally consolidated and is ready for a first flush. Should I leave the three alone? Re-dunk all three? Just re-dunk the one that's ready to fruit?

So I'm posting to read what experienced folk post, and I'm going to take a stab based on what I've read.

You don't want to dunk a cake that's ready to fruit... That's backtracking. Let the slow cakes fruit and once they have used up all their water to produce fruit then you'd dunk again. The inside of a water tank is not ideal for mycelium given there's not convertible 02( like humans need)

Your slower cakes are just... Slower to originally colonize. They might produce a first awesome flush, but if you dunk them again you're delaying progress.

And look into bottom watering rather than redunking. Then you won't halt your production.

Awesome. So unless I hear otherwise I'm just going to leave them alone and see what happens. Thanks for the quick reply.

No problem. I'm 98% sure that's what someone with lots of experience would say. I've been reading a lot about bottom watering instead of dunking at it really seems like the way to go. You should look it up while waiting for other replies... Assuming you're waiting like I would be.

Theyre still colonizing.

I think the recommended wait time to birth after 100% colonization is 7-10 days. Even if you take the cakes out to dunk and roll before this time frame they won't fruit until fully colonized.

That's what Ive read on the Shroomery cant say I know this from experience...

I couldn't wait any longer because the rest of the cakes were starting to grow mushrooms inside their jars. I think those three slow ones are just on a different schedule. I'll wait and see how they do on their own.

I've got a couple like that now, and they look like they'll set up just fine (behind the others schedule).
