Prison Inmate Gets New Trial After Doing 20 Months
By BONY SALUDES After spending 20 months in state prison, a San Francisco man was granted a new trial yesterday on charges stemming from a raid on one of the largest LSD manufacturing plants in the country. The raid on Franz Valley Road on July 24, 1969, netted $1 to $3 million in LSD and $50,000 worth of sophisticated lab equipment and three men, including Bruce Worman, 27. Worman in 1971, pleaded guilty of possessing dangerous drugs and was sentenced to state prison by Superior Court Judge Lincoln F. Mahan. Yesterday, Judge Mahan allowed Worman to withdraw his guilty plea, which means Worman's conviction is erased and he will be allowed to go to trial. In documents filed with the court, Worman's lawyer, Philip Scott Ryan, said he misled Worman in believing he would "probably get county time or something less than state prison." This, Ryan said, was done just before Worman pleaded guilty on Sept. 24, 1971. Ryan took full responsibility, stating the district attorney and the court acted properly. The conditions of the plea bargain at the time, it was pointed out were that two other drug-related charges against Worman would be dismissed, which they were, and that the district attorney would make no recommendation on sentence. Yesterday, however, it was discovered that Worman was not fully advised by the court at time of plea, in that the judge failed to inform him what the minimum and maximum sentences would be for pleading guilty to possession of dangerous drugs. Judge Mahan granted the motion to allow Worman to withdraw his plea, then Ryan disqualified Mahan from further participation in the case. The case was transferred to Judge John Moskowitz, who set Worman's trial for July 3. The two dismissed charges, contained in a Grand Jury indictment, were reinstated. They are possession of drugs for sale and manufacture of LSD. Worman pleaded innocent to all the charges yesterday. Moskowitz, reinstated his original bail of $25,000. Worman, Cyril Sia and Mark Dickison were arrested and indicted as a result of a raid on the LSD lab at 3107 Granz Valley Rd. Dickison went to trial before a jury, was convicted and on Dec 29, 1970, was sent to state prison by Judge Kenneth Eymann. Worman and Sia jumped ball and failed to appear for trial on Oct. 27, 1970. Worman subsequently was arrested in New York for possession of marijuana, placed on probation, and returned to Sonoma County June 3, 1971, for prosecution. He pleaded guilty on Sept. 24, 1971, and sentenced to state prison Oct. 21, 1971. He was serving time at Sierra Conservation Camp, Jamestown, before he was brought to court here on his petition for writ of habeas corpus. Sia, meanwhile, remains a fugitive.

I don't think it's a coincidence that's also essentially the hot bed for technological/computer programming/engineering since that era, as well.

If it's true that all answers are revealed when you die, then that's one of the things I'm looking forward to knowing. I want to know if anyone operated a lab for a long time, without getting caught. I'm sure there probably weren't many.

It seems like now is the perfect time for them to tell their stories, I'd love to hear them, or the stories of the people in busts like this.
