Quick question about Petrie dishes
    #24871225 - 12/27/17 10:30 AM (7 years, 21 days ago)

Just opened my pack, and the lids barely stay on like if you pick it up the lid will fall off is this normal? I couldn't find anything about it online

Yes.  After they are inoculated you're supposed to wrap them in parafilm.  That holds them together and allows for filtered gas exchange.  An inferior seal for petris once they are inoculated is Saran Wrap.

Yes.
And Saran is only inferior if you like parafilm more.
In practice it works the same in fact I find it easier to use. It would be my suggestion having used plenty of both.

Personally, I’d go with parafilm.

This is my first time using Petri dishes. I went with Saran Wrap, because I already had some in the kitchen. It works fine. It’s been 4 days and I have a nice little spot of mycelium growing, haven’t had any contaminants show up yet. Cut the wrap into sections like Bod does in one of his videos. Plus it’s free if you already use it in your kitchen.

I would suggest getting quarter pint jars for next time! I used to buy petri dishes, but I never found success.

I like the jars because you can create nice lids and pressure cook them. Plus, they're reusable and cheap. Great alternative if you're looking for one that is.
