yeh you can use just straight verm but some people like coir to help them determine the wetness of the casing layer, plus the mycelium eats up coir...
yes coir is often sold in shops such as petsmart as a reptile bedding it will probably be a brick of soft stuff that expands when wet
very cheap too
cujo found it works well to use a mix that is about 70% coir to about 30% verm

Yes, and yes again.

Great stuff.

I too am going to be casing a bulk straw grow in about 2 weeks. I am mostly out of verm and the last time I had to get it online. Should I just use coir and oyster shell? Or is peat moss a better casing layer? Opinions?

The good thing with coir is that it doesn't require any ph buffer. And yes, strait coir was proven to be quite effective too.

Mycellium seems to *REALLY* like coir so I think to addition of verm helps for over colonization of the layer.

Yeah, I have used coir/verm/oyster in every grow I have done. Maybe I can find some more verm around town. I do have some fine verm, would that be ok to use in the casing?

Never saw what fine verm looks like. as long as it's not like a fine powder, should be fine to mix! I would go for maybe 70% - 30%

Cool, I'll supplement with my fine verm. It is not powder but it is not very large, that is for sure.
