Birthing PF tech (first time grower) please help!!
    #24868965 - 12/26/17 08:43 AM (7 years, 22 days ago)

First-time grower took about 2 weeks for the jars to fully colonize half pint jars. I then waited an additional three and a half days to do the dunk and roll. Now I'm having trouble keeping the relative humidity between 90 and 100% in the shotgun fruiting chamber, and also it's been 5 days and I still have yet to see any signs of pinning. Ive gotten this far with great results because of your teachings, I just don't get the birthing part. I have a space heater, hydrometer, automatic and manual Fanning, and 12 hour cycled 6500k CFL light source. Maybe my cakes weren't fully submerged when I was dunking..... idk but any advice would be highly appreciated!! Thanks

Automatic fanning? :justno:

Also you shouldn't even be measuring the humidity. Hygrometers are notoriously unreliable in a sgfc. Look at the cakes not some cheap gauge.

Its also only been 5 days

Well How can I upload a picture to show you bro? And the cakes are slightly starting to bruising blue!! Auto fan meaning I have a mini electronic fan assembled to do the Fanning. Bad idea on the auto fanning?

Well the sgfc was invented by a man working 10+ hour days. Its supposed to be less work than brushing your teeth twice a day. Why you need to automate something that takes 3 seconds of work twice a day is beyond me but

Fanning is actually 100% pointless the sgfc has 100s of holes. The fanning is taken care of by removing the lid to mist lol. Which also is less work than brushing your teeth twice a day.

The PF/sgfc tek explicitly says not to use a fan in the room as well.

The stickys and rule post goes over uploading pictures.

So you've only been introducing fruiting conditions for 5 days? Can take 2-3 weeks AFTER putting into fruiting, to see pins. I pretty much just leave my tub alone, and mist when the coir goes from blackish to a light brown. Blackish means it has moisture, and when it turns light brown, it means it's getting too dry

Needs to be further off the ground. The tek says at least 6 inches from any side including the bottom. Those bottom homes are arguably the most important ones.

Ok will do. I read somewhere that it should take 1 week per flush so I was getting worried. And also I've been following Willy myco YouTube tutorials where he explains that the humidity humidity has to be between 90% And 100%. So I'm like scared if the cakes are wet enough or what but I'll be patient. Also do you have any idea why the tops of my cakes are starting to bruise blue am I Fanning too hard Maybe?

Are you speaking of the amount of perlite inside the shotgun fruiting chamber. Are you saying the cakes need to be more elevated?

Willy myco
Face no criticism on YouTube. His stuff is fine if you want to do mushrooms with the knowledge we had in 1997

I mean the entire sgfc off the ground. Just follow the directions lol. 6" on all 6 sides from a surface. 12" is better

Yes, you need them higher up, as he said, those jar rings are maybe an inch, and you need at least six inches. Whole lotta work just for a few cakes :frown:

Try using the jars that those cakes colonized in as your risers instead of the jar rings

Thanks! Fucking love you guys!! I'll try that now! And also I picked up one of the cakes in the back row to feel it's moisture content and behind where two pins. Should my cakes be moist to the touch? Because all I feel is a light weighted cake with dry verm! I also have my space heater pointed directly towards my closet. Is that bad??

If the cake feels really light and appears dry then it probably needs to be misted. If it feels a bit heavy it may be over saturated. You want beads of moisture on the surface, but not pools of water. You want to allow the beads of moisture to evaporate before misting again, as evaporation of moisture from the surface of the substrate is a major pinning trigger. It’s a balancing act that I’m still trying to perfect.

Here, give this a read - it’s a good discussion on proper surface conditions.

Edit: yeah that looks much better now that you’ve raised it up. Here’s another good reference for you as well:

Get rid of space heater, they may fruit slightly slower at cooler temps, but less chance for contam. And that space heaters probs drying em out. They shouldn't feel super dry and light weight, you want them moisturized but not soggy

Yo. Good work.

Took me 18 days to get my last pins.
5days is nothing to get worked up about.

How far is the CFL. As long as there is a barrier like plastic or glass and is about a foot away from the cakes, this can help with the temps.

I also find misting well then fanning for a little while to help the evaporation has helped me with pins. I fan soo much its almost like feeling the Myc breath lol.

Good luck

Its fine. Can be from handling. Or simply the misting can also cause it. Bruising aint a big deal. It still fruits fine. Gotta be gentle with them ;b too many variables.

Yeah, it’s normal. It usually happens after harvesting or if it’s drying out.

Yeah everytime I grab them to feel the moisture content they feel dry as s***. would it be okay if I re-dunk and roll them. Or should I wait for my first flush?

Just maintain proper surface conditions and wait for your 1st flush. After your 1st flush you can re-dunk for ~12 hours, but no need to roll- just place back into fruiting
