problem with casin
    #2486867 - 03/31/04 01:23 PM (12 years, 8 months ago)

I recently cased a pint jar with 1" bottom casing, 1" substrate middle layer, and 1" top. A week passed and I placed it into the terrarium where the temp is around 75-80* with a humidity of about 80%. It's been almost a week and there is no sign of pinning. What can be the problem?

Your casing layers are too big for the substrate. They need to be about 1/4 the substrate depth. You have 1 inch of substrate, you need 1/4 inch of casing not 1 inch.

It will also have to be incubated for about 2-3 weeks before you fruit it.

Have you read any of the FAQ's?

as niteowl said, its too thick.
i would suggest dumping off the extra verm or casing layer.
whatever doesnt stick in the jar, is probably attached to mycelium =)
then just wait some more for the newly exposed mycelia to start pinning.
all in all, no real problem, just some more waiting.

I don't want to dump off the extra casing layer because it might get contaminated and the top has already been punched through by mycelium. I have two more containers that are like this. Should I just leave them to colonize the container longer?

then maybe cold shock them, if they are that advanced, the only thing you truly need to do is wait longer. or cold shock it into fruiiting, also search for temperature cycling in the advanced cultivation section, good article on quick pinning with casings.

also, you dont want them to colonize TOO much, overlay can happen in jars too im sure.

If the mycelium is growing thru the casing layer you will need to patch those spots.

Thanks. But what should I do with my current containers? Should I just let them sit for another week? And after that week I don't want to have problems pinning it because of the thick layer. Or might that be a problem?
