Got some fully colonized albino a+ I'm spawning today, spawn looks really good to me, it took a bit longer but the temps were really low, it actually stalled for a couple days when the temp dropped but as soon as I got it back to around 72 they all took off, I used some half pint jars to get some good candidates for grain to grain and I'm happy with the look so far. 1 tub will be spawned today and maybe another in a couple days, waiting on some to finish.

Finally getting some activity in my couple shoeboxes. One bacterial Is finally pushing a few pins up and my better one spawned from cakes is doing awesome and knotting up. Another that I let get too dry and then cases with verm and coir seems to be recovering and beginning to poke through the casing. Any tips on how to interpolate a surface when covered with casing? Kind of just reading when it needs misting and when it may start to pin? I’ve never cased anything before this.

Just make sure the casing stays moist, you should be fine, a casing is just to keep the moisture just right, not too wet or too dry. If the mycelium is peaking through you should be good, I feel moisture content is the key to vigorous growth more than anything.

And that second tub looks awesome Variegated.

Do you guys usually have to mist the shoebox while it is colonizing? Or would i be fine with just leaving the lid on until it starts to pin, and then mist/dub tub it?

Must if it's dry, if it's moist the entire colonization no need to mist

Alright sweet, should I be fanning them also or does the lid/dub tub provide enough fae?

And during colonization do I still look for beads ontop of the substrate like during fruiting or should it just feel moist?

That looks great. How often are you having to mist? And do you fan after every misting?

Never fan, only mist when you can’t see beads of moisture. Shoeboxes are small and have an imperfect seal that provides plenty of FAE.

Misting is unneccesary before first flush unless you open them alot. Some people encourage evaporation to get a more full pinset. If you want to try that, wait until the mycelium begins to knot, remove the lid then mist heavy and let them get almost dry, repeat a few times before replacing the lid and putting them back on the shelf. (Or be a misting fool and open air fruit the whole way, just keep those beads of moisture on the top of the myc)

With thick pinsets and small amount of sub you can bottom water starting when the substrate begins to pull away from the box, otherwise you might end up with a bunch of tiny fruits.

Everyones situation is different, they work fine If you never open them too.

Just finished up my Christmas shoeboxes.... Just two for now! Lol, call it my trial run:

G2G spawn from an original Ms syringe to grain parent jar so we'll see how it goes! Good I hope!!!. 1:2.5  wbs to sub ratio.... Sub is hpoo/coir with gypsum.

Thanks for the tip Mushy!

Sweet, thanks for the reply.

Should i be able to see beads of moisture even during colonization of the shoebox, or does it only bead up during fruiting?

And for cubensis would you recommend dub tubbing it to allow for more room, or will just using the lid provide enough room you think?

You should be able to see tiny bead of moisture on the myc as soon as it pokes through the top layer. If you prepped your sub properly (field capacity).

Dub if you use more than 3 qts total spawn and sub but you dont need to do that until introducing fruiting conditions at earliest or when pins reach the lid at the latest. 1:1.5 (2.5total) can finish with the lid on but you can let them reach the lid then open it and let them ride until harvest the next day or later that day.

Sweet, i'm only gonna be using 1 quart of spawn to 1 quart of sub, so ill just leave the lid on.

Is there a way to tell if its moist enough during colonization since it doesnt bead up until the myc pokes through?

Prep your sub properly and don’t worry about it.

The most important thing is clean spawn.

Yea thats the thing with this jar, its been taking craaaazy long to colonize. Theres no visible contam, but its around 2 and a half months right now and its only just about to finish colonizing.

I definitely over hydrated my grains a lot so i'm hoping the slow colonization is due to that and not bacteria or something. Either way i'm hoping i can at least get a little something from it.

Gonna be doing a new set of shoeboxes after not doing a bulk for like 2-3 months. Some of my spawn is obviously contammed with oyster. Should I spawn it anyway if I have the boxes to spare? Free edibles if its the case :P

Thanks so much for this thread Mushboy!! I can't wait to make up my shoeboxes!! I've read through 63 pages so far and I keep learning with each new one I read

For Christmas I got a presto 23 qt PC, 100$ gift card to Wal-Mart for thier totes and ect things I might need and I just ordered a perfect little green house Martha for my grow closet that based off my measurements will fit 9 shoeboxes perfectly lmk what you guys think and it was only 19.99$

Also one last thing for anyone who can help since I haven't seen it mentioned yet, my rye comes in half pound bags and the sub I'm using in 5 pound bags with filter patches. For a standard 6qt shoebox that I wanted to do a 1:2 ratio would I use 1pound of rye to 2 pounds of sub or would that overfill the tote? What's the conversion of rye in quarts to pounds? If anyone knows it would really help take away my guess work when I go to spawn.
