does direction of cakes matter?

i've searched through dozens of teks and no one is completely explicit. does the direction of the cakes matter when they are birthed?
for example, i have half-pint jars that are colonized. these jars are colonizing with the lid on top (right side up). when i remove my cakes from the jars must the cakes be placed in the incubator the same way they were placed in the jars? or can i simply invert the cakes so that the original top is now the bottom?
if the cakes do indeed need to be placed right side up (as they were in the jars) then wont it take longer to fruit since the mycelia will need to colonize the dry vermiculite still left on top?
in my next set of jars ill colonize them with the lid down to prevent this issue.

The dry verm layer makes a good end to rest them on. I pretty
much always have the dry verm layer as the base, and the jar bottom
as the top. Inverted so to speak.
though it doesnt make a huge difference imo.

in my dogs experience, the most pins come from the dry verm barrier, because, as he says, this is like a psuedo-casing layer for the jar, after 100% colonization and before cold shock/fruiting. he likewise uses them for the base, but also realizes doing so will mean many will grow out from underneath the cake, sometimes travelling an inch from the center of the cake, to the edge, then up. all a matter of preferences. on the other hand, setting them on the dry verm barrier down also protects the cakes somewhat, if you are the type that places them directly on perlite/hydroton/lava.
in the end, its like loki said, doesnt matter much, just what works for you.

p.s. just dont decide halfway thru of them being on the barrier to flip them upside down, might confuse the mycelium, lightwise =)

Maybe chop the cakes in half and rest the middle/inside downwards? Would that work?

the side that is cloest to source of humidity will pin first,so it really dont matter what side is up or down
if you are using perlite as a source the bottom will usually pin first because it is closest to the humidity...
unless your cakes are suspended above the perlite on a rack
chicken wire works great

Hmmm intresting question. I noticed that the majority of pins start at the bottom sides, some directly on the bottom. maybe it would be goo to have the bottom stay as the bottom

ehehe i had a pin come out the bottom of a cake that was resting on its used verm barrier and i put it on its side for the time that it took to fruit then put it upright again after i dont think it matters at all what direction they are placed in, as long as no pins are being damaged by the cake's weight

so this isnt necessary... unless u want to restrict air exchange. in fact lid down may prevent mycellium from completely colonising the jar due to lack of air exchange
