Monotub questions

Howdy folks. Have a fairly simple question, that I could use an answer too. What I would like to know is, can someone explain the math behind mono tubs. I have been using trays in large walk in tent (berthas) and occasionally trays in large shotgun totes. So, I understand the basic logic of shotgun totes, in respect that a 1/4 inch whole, every 2 inches, will provide proper air flow. And from my own findings, I have found one of my berthas, set up with a bathroom exhaust fan blowing outside, using a light timer set to come on and off every 15 minutes, provides perfect airflow (for birthas). So, my question to you, is how many air holes stuffed with polyfill, will provide enough air flow? And do you have an equation, that would apply to any size tote? Sorry, I really need to understand the numbers of something before I can properly complete a project. And although, i am used to having to experiment my way through shit. It would be nice for me, to just be able to do this, with, the proper knowledge. Thank you, and Much Love Roaddog...

There is no mathematical formulating for perfect air holes.... You just need to have them serve the basic purpose of providing fresh air exchange. You need some at the bottom, and some at the top.
Something like this.....

I have four holes on each long side; two on top, two on bottom. Then two holes on the short side top and bottom..... I just use a small tomato paste can and heat it on the stove to make my holes and just eyeball place them! I could even gotten away with two holes on the long sides too, if I woulda just centered them..... Getting good passive fresh air exchange for fruiting is the purpose, and there are tons of different styles of supplementing that! Like Mushboy said you can get a away with no holes in a mono! I just guess one would just have to fan more...? idk for sure tho...

I believe this is what you are looking for... Basic principles of a monotub

Thank you Threads from God89. Thats a pretty good answer. And I like the tomato past can idea. Funny, think was, I was wondering about a better way, then a hole say, which is tricky to use on totes, especially the clear ones. And 4 holes on each side seems logical. May I ask, how often you fan them? Much love Roaddog..Quote:

A monotub doesn't need fanning. It circulates fresh air all on its own using the heat from the mycelium. Read that link it will go into detail about all this.
Also if you have a hole saw then use it. Its way easier and more efficient than heating a can and melting holes.

Yes, a hole saw attachment for a drill would make my life easier....lol. Only time I fan my monos is if I accidentally mist too much . Or if I'm trying to tickle the pins a little bit... . Otherwise fanning is mostly unnecessary, but I have seen Trusted Cultivators who say they occasionally lightly fan.

Fanning isn't necessary if you've got everything put together right, but it's not like a breeze is ever going to hurt. It's just a waste of time if you're doing everything else correctly, is all.

well, things seem to be going well. Thanks folks, I do greatly appreciate it. I have been using Marthas, for the last decade or so. And never really tried monos before. They are very easy to fruit compared to the constant maintenance martha's require. And it appears, that you can do far more with a smaller space using monos. Anyways heres a picture, it looks like Ill be able to harvest them tomorrow. And again thanks for the help. <3 Much Love Roaddog...http://
