$200-$300 for a complete flowhood build is pretty unrealistic. I have built 3 and the cheapest one (which I got a free blower for) costed about $300.

Fungi perfecti has prebuilt flowhoods. The smallest is a 24" x 12" and costs around $700 with shipping. My advice is to decide what size your space is capable of and what your goals are with the equipment. If your interest is inoculating spawn bags or supplemented blocks, you will want a minimum size of 24" x 24" for your filter. Bags can be done with a smaller flowhood but it is a big pain in the ass, and takes much longer due to the space restrictions.

If you are crafty, or have a trustworthy  friend who is, you could build a nice 24" x 24" flowhood with your budget. It is easiest to build the cabinet out of 3/4" plywood as there is no internal framing necessary. I took apart a FP flowhood a couple years ago and found it to have internal 1x1 framing clad in 1/4" ply, which is how I built my 24" x 48" unit (it is a much lighter build, but more difficult to pull off).

Sometimes you can find old lab hoods on craigies - but as with anything on the classifieds the condition is a crapshoot. I have had a couple friends go that route and they seem happy though, so don't let me dissuade you :sun:

If you do decide to build a hood, there are many actually helpful members who can help you along the way. It seems complicated at first undertaking the project but once you get going things will fall into place.

A little porn for inspiration... :hippie:

Yeah, I have a flow hood. And then I look at this and see that I'm doing it all wrong. Goddamn, that is sweet.
