I confess I took a 2.5 quart jar of ovoid spawn that hold a couple spots of mold on it to a place up the road that sells mulch and fire wood and dumped it in a huge ass pile of wood chips lol spreading the love

@ky. If a new pressure cooker isn't an option go with pint jars. You might be able to fit 3 or 4 in your pc. Just a thought

I do use pints I can fit 3 in at a time but I got greedy and put a quart size pickle jar in it on its side but I think water got in through the poly fill hole

I confess it's nice to go away for a few days and come home to no mold still. Yay! I think I'm gonna get me some fruits.

Also my oysters and lions mane survived the two days I was away too. I really hated putting the in bins. It looks like the lions mane dried out a wee bit but it will be fine.

Since that happened, they have been sitting out front or down the road a little a few times a week. I plan to grow edibles at home instead now and keep the actives at another location. I may just be paranoid, but I would rather be safe than sorry.

I confess I just figured something important out.

I went to look at my jars which I made on the 15th and didn't see nearly as much progress as I should have. My heart sunk because first thing I thought was bacteria. Then I remembered wait. I put a PC indicator in this time so the jars had to be done. I looked them over just in case. There were no metabolites in any of them and they just looked so perfect and healthy and I couldn't find any signs of molds or yeasts. So it wasn't anything that happened while I was putting the plate in the jars. Then I started thinking what if I caramelized the grain or something like that putting it in there for an extra 30 minutes and ruined it.  I gave the jar a bit of a shake just in case and nothing. So I'm sitting there thinking why isn't the mycelium leaping of the agar like it's supposed to. I go to look at the new plates I made from the KSSS and those were fine except maybe  moving a little slow. Then it came to me. The plates are all thicker than usual because I accidentally made too much agar. So basically it wasn't moving much because the mycelium still had a thick dense source of nutrients to feed off of before moving on to the grain. The agar was even still moist and the mucelium had colonized it fully. I gave the jars a lightshake and broke up the grains a little and hopefully that will help.

I've had similar problems when I prep'd grains and the moisture content was off...they looked great but the wedges stayed in the jar until they dried up completely...I use Eats oat prep now...eazy peezy

I'm hoping that shaking up the small clumps of grains that did colonize will help. If they aren't attached to the agar then they will have nothing to feed off of but the grain and will have to move now.

Yea that's reason to be paranoid.  Did they accuse you of breaking the law?

I have my script practiced.  Just stare at them like they're morons and tell them I am a microbiologist working with agar testing bacterial growth for my university.  I think many cops would just shrug that off and believe it.  Most are lookin for pot plants and meth labs.

He said "We know exactly what your doing, I would advise you to get rid of it, you never know when we will come back". I told him he's welcome to come by anytime but please call first. That I wasn't breaking any laws, that any psilocybe spores (he saw them in the book I made) I have are completely legal for taxonomy as long as I destroy any mycelium that may grow prior to the knotting stage as per DEA guidlines, because no illegal substance is present at that stage according to the DEA'S own labs.

He asked where I get the spores and I said "Through the mail like everyone else or a cow field". Then he says " well when you get them from the pasture it's illegal, because you have to have possession of the mushroom to print it". I said " Not true, they never leave the pasture. I just cut off the cap, lay foil a board and print it under a container, they never leave". He said " you have it all figured out don't you"? I  told him I wasn't trying to be a smartass, I just read and inform myself. He said " I hope your right" then left. A few days later they start showing up out front and down the street in marked cars.

I confess..after an exchange like that with a cop id have a for sale sign in the front yard fast. No way in hell i would ever feel comfortable growing anything there again.

I'm lucky I know enough about mycology to quickly divert the subject to something really confusing and then I can bat my eyelashes a bit and smile. And then I can show him to my collection of oysters and offer them some to take home to cook dinner with or maybe I could come over and cook some for them. Also I'm lucky I don't really look like they type whatever that is to them.

you guys should say microbiologist instead of mycologist and put out a few fancy books on the subject and print out some research papers and then male a notebook with fake notes and leave it out. Make it look like work or school.

Put up some posters on the subject too. Tell them you are trying to clone your cat or something.

I confess it's no skin off my back to not grow actives, I live in a state where they are plentiful pretty much year round, but I am fascinated with the mycelium its self and hope to become more proficient at  taxonomy with each stage of development of the various genus.

This whole situation has caused me to question what I'm doing.  It's been about 3 months since it happened, but I feel like they will still come at anytime. I hope to have a bunch of edibles and toad stools growing if they do show back up.

I was honest and said mycologist because that's what I'm attempting to do,

As a commemoration of 500 pages of amateur mycologist confessions (Congratulations PsiloPsychin!!!) , and as my 4000th post, I'd like to add my stupidest, most dangerous confession ever. It's been a while since I did this one, and I've kept it to myself due to a fair bit of shame being felt about it...

I was at my place running my sterilizer. It's not an AA or anything, just an 8 quart old-ass Italian PC that I converted, without a safety on it. I was still getting it up to pressure, and what I would do was heat it up to about 17-18 PSI, then turn the heat to the lowest, letting it drop to 15. Then I'd turn it on again to push it towards 17-18, until it would stay above 15 with the smallest flame. After that, it will keep rising so I have to be around to babysit the cooker so it doesn't over-pressure. So I'm doing all this as usual, only at some point, my gas runs out. I go change the gas bottle out back, and turn the heat back on high to pump it above 15 again. I suddenly think "oh wait, I still gotta take my wrench back inside" So I go out again. BIG FUCKING MISTAKE!

I come back inside to a cooker that looks a bit off at first, especially because the needle seems to point to "0". I come closer to take a better look, and all of the sudden I realize what's happening. My face flushes to a pale white as I find the knob to quickly turn the stove off, and my knees tremble with a weakness in them that comes close to the type of feelings you get when the cops are right out the door and you're flushing your stash down the john. It was, of course, not at 0 PSI. No, when I turned the heat off, it took about 10 seconds for the needle to show any movement. As it started to back down from it's most ominous point ever, I tried to regain some sense of calm in me, and tried to reassure myself that after turning it off, things would be alright. And they were. Except for my cooker. From that point in time, it definitely has some deforming in the lid, causing it to not close off completely without some convincing. I've never left the cooker again with the heat on high. That was a lesson I will never ever forget. I'm glad to have lived that moment, because we all know there could have been a very different outcome to testing a pc-gone-sterilizer up to 40 PSI...

Doc, what a crappy situation. I'd go with the flow though, and not just keep them at bay. Instead, invite them. First time you could go up and offer them some properly prepared mushrooms, but REAL nice ones, like having some leftover Christmas turkey pieces floating on an oyster cream sauce, and say something like "Here guys, it's a cold day out, have some leftover turkey...", then next time you get them something like lion's mane, and eventually on one of those "visits" you start talking about mushrooms in all your enthusiasm, let them notice how much of a nutty professor is in you, then happily invite them in "to show them". Then inside continue on, just really let them have the nutty professor part... Hopefully they'll leave you alone enough to get the fuck out of there so you can start a legit grow op with edibles without fearing them busting your door any minute. After all, I think a lot of us are painfully aware of how a house looks after it's been raided by the cops, even if you are innocent as a baby. They just don't give a fuck.
