I'd read the reviews to decide if it's good or not. it's just like drying other fruits, etc. You just need it to have a working heating element & fan. I like to dry my fruits around 140-160 and leave them in for 24 hrs. sometimes they get cracker before then. But dehydrators that only have lower temps are also fine. Read the reviews on the sites you're buying off of.
As for desiccant, there are plenty of threads & TEKs out there

I use exclusively the cheapest, shittiest ones I can find. So without actually looking, yes, if it's a dehydrator it'll work great.

Yeah you don’t need anything too fancy, just make sure the one you get has a temperature setting as most people dehydrate at 115 or lower, and jerky dehydrators are usually at like 195 or something.

I just got one on Amazon for $55. I set it on 95 for awhile then stuck a thermometer in it to check if it was accurate and it was pretty much right on the money. I found another thread on here once where the OP had a dehydrator that they'd set to 95 and it ended up being closer to 150 degrees. Be cautious about that.

You guys seriously need to check Craigslist for these things. Jars, PC's, dehydrators, etc. are all over the Craigslist in my area. Check there first!

i regularly use mine at the max setting 160F. the key ingredient in shrooms doesnt degrade until a much higher temperature certainly over 212F which is boiling point and thats whats used to make Shroom Tea.

If your so low on money then you can also just use your oven at lowest temperature setting, high fan speed and a mitten to keep the sash open a bit.

There's nothing wrong with using an open oven and fan to dry your shrooms if it's all you have. A dehydrator is literally just that: hot air moving around. Mine runs at 160F and I can get my oven to that temperature range, for sure. The active alkaloids can survive the heat. People have been known to sautee them. I remember RR saying he does that with little potency loss.

A dehydrator is an electric device a stove is most likely a gas device. Leaving a stove on open for 24 hours is a safety hazard. Sure a new stove is probably fine but what about an old stove? What if theres sleeping kids in your house who dont know better than to breathe gas? Elderly? Pets. What if you smoke and theres a gas leak spreading for the last day maybe you tyler durden yourself.
Also you arent going to watch that stove for 24 hours so how can you guarantee something doesnt fall into the stove? Shitty ass desiccant is safer than the oven.

I think most ovens are definitely electric. Uh yeah, if yours is gas, you wouldn't want to run it that long. Most mushrooms don't need 24 hours either, that's overkill. I can dry regular cubes in like 8 hours or less. I'm not saying it's optimal or safe, I'm saying many people have dried them fine in stoves with a fan. Obviously your ultra specific death scenarios are where I wouldn't use one, but I don't think many people would say, "Fuck it, I'll leave a gas oven on with my kids hanging around while I go leave."
And desiccant wouldn't dry a fresh batch, it keeps them dry once dry. They'd be used up way before the mushrooms are dry. An oven would do in a pinch while you buy a dehydrator.

I read this about drying times. ever since i go 24 hours.
I wasnt saying people would do that intentionally. Im saying we shouldnt recommend a stove drying in the off chance their gas stove is sub optimal or even leaks a little. I had a craigslist oven that leaked and actually made mini explosions or at least loud noises that sounded like explosions. I ended up getting rid of it but ever since im real careful about my stove. People sell junk on craigslist all the time.
Not trying to be contrarian for the sake of it. i just believe there is no way you can ever say its a good idea to dry shrooms in front of an oven for 8 hours safely every time like it is with a dehydrator that is set and forget. Stove dehydration and alcohol on sab walls are my biggest safety pet peeves.
In some parts of the country there are earthquakes and shit could easily fall from one part of the kitchen into an open stove. Not the business man.

He's storing his mushrooms in a porous bag that takes in oxygen. They're definitely going to be bendy at some point. I've never had that issue and I rarely ever go more than 10 hours, but I store in jars with desiccant.

Over a year later and sorta. Potency seems tip top but the older ones are slightly bendy but nothing like poorly dried shrooms get.
I think most of us have bought some street shrooms that were so poorly dried its depressing as fuck that people ruin them.
Also gas stoves release humidity into the air. Really, really shitty for drying. Thats why reheating fried foods in a gas oven is never recommended. Check out food forums.

I feel like it should've gone without saying that I was speaking of electric stoves for short periods of time to get shit dry enough for desiccant to take over. Not leaving a gas stove full blast for 24 hours while your quadruplets are lighting cherry bombs. Anyway, yeah, get a dehydrator.
