worlds largest open jam?
    #2485929 - 03/31/04 01:56 AM (13 years, 8 months ago)

i had an idea for the worlds largest improvised jam session.

in my head it looked something like 1000s of people on the great lawn in central park, a giant drum circle surrounded by people playing every instrument imaginable. maybe a guest star leading the jam.

simple rules; dont drown out the person next to you. try to fit in with what is going on. puff puff pass etc.

the possible downside; cacophony (but even that might be fun)

what do you think? could it work? has it been tried before? (it seems like it must have been). most important would you/would you not be willing to participate and why?

i wish my organizational skills werent piss poor.

k

cool idea!
I think it could be done but would take some work.. we have barter fairs with drum cicrles up to 100 people sometimes..it always sounds great, of course im always tripping my balls off though

My band is a open jam band..we jam with anyone who wants to its awesome  I dont plan on ever changing it either

Unfortunately, it's hard enough to even find a few people that you mesh well with. Trying to hold a jam that big with anything beyond just a buncha drums would be nearly impossible.. take into consideration the skill levels of all the people who would be involved, too. I think cacophony would be precisely the result, heh.

Here in Montreal during the summer we have those tamtam jam at Mont. Royal. So when it's nice outside every Sunday there is like thousands of people coming to have fun and chill out and many of them play tamtam or other istruments. So yeah it works but you need to have motivated people hehe.

they had something organized a while back with 500 or so drummers in a big arena.
But it wasn't really a jam session because they were all given the music beforehand and all played the exact same thing. But it was still pretty cool.

I doubt something like you mentioned would work though/

I had a new variation on this idea. Me performing on a software synthesizer in front of an audience, where most every audience member has partial control over the formation of the sound (filters, tuning, resonance, delay, mix; etc.) forcing me to improvise as the sound slowly evolves.

Of course, everyone would have to be zooming...  :gd_icon:
