Hmm mod discs?  Never heard of these, sounds cool   My roommate recently tried to install a mod chip into his ps2, that was like a month ago and its still broken.  Fortunately he's not a total dumbass so its not broken beyond repair, but nontheless its still broken.  I really wouldn't recommend doing this yourself unless you're real good with electronics and you have real good directions.  I've heard of some people that will install a mod chip for you professionally, for a price.  I don't know, just another option for you to look into.

Oh yeah if you play online games, get a mod chip you can turn on and off, cause you can't play online with a mod chip installed.  You know that DNAS Authentification process you have to wait thru every time you log on?  It is basically scanning your system to make sure there isn't any foreign hardware in there, i.e. a mod chip.  But if your mod chip is turned off, then it can't see it, and you're cool.

Yeah I definitely wouldn't feel comfortable soldering a chip into a piece of equipment that costs... uh... however much it costs.

I don't know about the way to do it with a PS2, but for the original playstation you could simply doctor the spring device on the lid, so that even when the machine was open the spring would stay down (thus the playstation would think it was closed), then put in a regular game disc, and then at the boot-up screen, quickly take it out, put in the burnt disc, and close the lid... probably some similar method for PS2 that doesn't require adding an (expensive) chip.

I'm pretty certain that there are no boot discs for the PS2, chipping is pretty much the only way I think. I know someone who makes a little money on the side chipping and repairing various consoles and arcade boards, and he's told me more than once that the PS2 is a real bitch to install a chip in, especially the newer models.
He can do an xbox in no time (it's all off-the-shelf PC components) but refuses to do any more PS2's because it's such a hassle.

The above is an extract from my fictional novel, "The random postings of Edame".

In the beginning was the word. And man could not handle the word, and the hearing of the word, and he asked God to take away his ears so that he might live in peace without having to hear words which might upset his equinamity or corrupt the unblemished purity of his conscience.

And God, hearing this desperate plea from His creation, wrinkled His mighty brow for a moment and then leaned down toward man, beckoning that he should come close so as to hear all that was about to be revealed to him.

"Fuck you," He whispered, and frowned upon the pathetic supplicant before retreating to His heavens.
