A mysterious pressure cooker
    #2485178 - 03/30/04 08:16 PM (19 years, 10 months ago)

I found some contams tonight, I blame using the steaming in a pot deal for sterilization. This also stops me from using grains, which I would like to do, since PF Cakes are so damn time consuming.
I know someone who would probably give me their old pressure cooker (I just can?t afford a new one right now.)
Here?s the thing: It has no pressure gauge, I don?t know the model (by Presto I think,) and I am sure they lost the manual a long time ago. All I really know is that it is big enough and made from steel.
Should I take it anyways?
All the talk of obtaining a certain pressure makes me anxious, as I really have no means of determining it with that PC.
Thanks for any advice.

Does it use weights on the the top? I have an old presto that has a little nob that goes over the top, the knob alone represents 5 psi, one weight is 10psi and the second weight is 15 psi.

its probably a rocker-type thats 10-15psi, more likely 10.
rocker top = weighted cap that rocks when the pressure builds up

If you can borrow it for free i mean, you won't lose anything by trying to sterilize some grain, inoculate and see.

I say go for it because you said it : *PF cakes are so time consuming* and I must add not really challenging.

Yeah it has this little metal rocker on top (about the size of a shot glass, or a touch smaller)

Right on the handle, if I remember correctley, there are cooking times for various foods written down....
Too bad I can't take a look at it right now, but its in another city...
But maybe someone knows that model?

Nothing to offer you man, I'm a newbie and am fresh out spores (this is why I am pretty god damn angry about the contams in my last batch)

Besides, if I pop the guage on, and find the PC only hits 10 PSI, it will all have been for not.... I mean, there is no way to increae PSI, safley, is there?

10 psi is fine for your needs, my dog guarantees it.
its just a matter of cooking longer.
45 min for pf cakes minimum, FROM the tme it starts rocking, not before
as for grains, dog does 1 1/2 hours for half-pint popcorn, 2 hours for anything more.

rough guideline, lots of other posts about psi too, about how long they should cook to compensate for the lack of 15 psi.

My popcorn has all colonised without contams (my PC is a 'rocker type').

I would follow dysphoria's advice and also consider soaking for 24 hrs beforehand (seems to be working for me...)

Check the gauge, I have been using a presto pressure cooker with a rocker and it hits 15 psi if you have all the weights on it. There is the rocker and the two weights.

Ahhh, the ultimate advice; do a search.
But at least now I feel a bit more confident, as I didn?t know that you could compensate for lower PSI with time?(guess that?s just common sense!)
Thanks very much, I will grab that PC.

I have a Presto I recently bought with a Rocker. It says its 15psi but there are no other wights, just the Rocker. Seems to work great. They are pretty cheap new too. I have an 8qaurt. Not that big but gets the job done and it was only 39 dollars at Sears.
