Norway just voted to decriminalise drugs across the country * 7

Norway just voted to decriminalise drugs across the country - http://metro.co.uk/2017/12/17/norway-just-voted-to-decriminalise-drugs-across-the-country-7166594/

Norway has voted to decriminalise drugs across the country in a landmark move that will see addicts treated instead of punished.

Four out of nine parties in the country’s parliament voted in favour of the move as Norway becomes the first Scandinavian country to decriminalise.

It means users will be given treatment instead of a prison sentence and lawmakers hope it will free up police resources.

Norway’s Health Committee was inspired by a recent trip to Portugal, a country which has implemented its own decriminalisation programme.

While drug use and possession will still be illegal, decriminalisation would mark a shift in the authorities’ attitudes to users.

Nicolas Wilkinson, health chairman of the country’s Socialist Left Party, told VG: ‘This is the start of a big reform. Now a big effort is being done to switch the system from punishment to help.’

Sveinung Stensland, deputy chairman of the Storting Health Committee, added: ‘The change will take some time, but that means a changed vision: Those who have a substance abuse problem should be treated as ill, and not as criminals with classical sanctions such as fines and imprisonment.’

Portugal decriminalised drugs in 2001, and addicts there are given therapy or community service instead of being sent to prison.

Like the model soon to be adopted in Norway, drugs still remain illegal in Portugal which means growing them, dealing and trafficking them carry criminal penalties.

But if you are caught in possession of a small amount, the drugs are confiscated and the suspect is interviewed by social worker, a psychiatrist and lawyer.

You could then be hit with sanctions which include a fine, travel bans and confiscation of professional licences. Addicts could also be sent to rehab or given community service.

Here is the article paraphrased. So they are switching from punishment to help but still punish you while trying to help you...........:spun:

read the headline rules, you need to post a link to the article and copy paste the full text into your OP.

That said, this is excellent news. Sure is nice to have real newsworthy articles being posted in shroomery headlines again.

Yes it would be nice if the link were posted.  They still punish you by fines, travel bans and confiscation of professional licenses so it's definitely not punishment-free as claimed.  This makes me wonder if they actually did remove criminal penalties, or if this is just another pseudo-decriminalization measure that sounds like decriminalization but really isn't.

Even if they're still prosecuting drug users Norwegian law enforcement isn't nearly as harsh as American LEAs.  They also aren't really driven by vengeance as much as they are by actual rehabilitation.  Prisoners in Norwegian maximum security prisons probably have dormitories that are nicer than a lot of Americans' apartments.

That's missing the point.  The main damage caused by a drug arrest comes from the criminal conviction record and confiscation of professional licenses, which affects your ability to find a job.  This law does the latter at least, and I hope not the former.  I could care less for the prison amenities.  You can get out of jail, but almost never erase a felony conviction from your record.

therapy (brainwashing) or community service (slave labor) instead of being sent to prison (bad hotel).

:whistling::super:

I had a sick relative, deliberately go to sleep, in a parked car. She now has to go to anti-drug brainwash class and pay a fine, out of her limited household budget. She goes to get medical treatment (not a prescription for narcotics). The doctor sees the police interaction, in her medical record, and she is being told that she is malingering, so as not to go to classes.

My indirect Nestrud ancestors came to America with Leif Erikson before Columbus and fought with giant sasquatch. My Nestrud side came later in the 1800s after the giants were killed off or driven into the deep forests.  and it was all farmlife and warfare. Anyway fuck yeah! They already have way better prison systems than us.

im in norway i m still a criminal in eyes of the Law.havent noticed any of this.well when i can grow my own weed.they have decriminalized it.as of now if u have a none violent related drug charge u can choose rehab or jail.not decriminalized in my opinion but might be to early.i have been waiting for this some time.hopefully its not just a thing to save Money not People.
legalize THC and we would have alot less addicts.same goes for psilocybin LSD etc.
Atleast its a light in the tunnel for medicinal use of so called drugs.
weird its been so quiet around this

Many confuse decriminalization with legalization. Legalization is the only right choice.

The state is already the largest, presumptive market maker in the drug trade, at war with the competition.
