Where do you guys follow all these "new" music genres from? I've heard vapor wave before but these sub genres of obscure genres.... what's a good resource for me to to start exploring these weird crevices of electronic music?
I start from whatever my starting point is. Most relevant to me these days is synthwave (although I do listen to vaporwave too), so I frequent synthwave subreddits, like r/outrun, r/newretrowave, etc. Tons of good info there. I find artists & record labels I like, follow them on Facebook. See what the artists are up to, what the labels are putting out. I also join niche groups on Facebook, like the synthwave vinyl collector’s group, and the one about live synthwave. If I see a few people discussing a musician I never heard of, I take 3 minutes to check it out. I find Spotify playlists of synth/vaporwave, listen to lots of Spotify. When I come across something that really catches my ear that I’m unfamiliar with, I check into it more immediately, or make a mental note to do it later. I fall down rabbit holes of related videos of stuff I like on YouTube. I check out relevant blogs (for synthwave, I like Vehlinggo, and a site called “metal sucks” does a feature called Synthave Sunday that has introduced me to some dank stuff). I even go grassroots with shit & encourage people I know who are into similar music to hit me up if they find something awesome. Shroomery user California comes through a lot.
That’s most of what I do, but I don’t use Twitter or SoundCloud at all, and while Bandcamp is a tremendous resource, I pretty much only use it to buy music (buy thru bandcamp, folks! Artists personally get the most out of it). I also peruse Qrates, but that’s geared toward the record collection side of things (qrates is like gofundme for getting vinyl records pressed, it’s pretty cool).
It can be tough originally finding out about these micro niche genres, but once you have any little thread of an idea to go on, you can really dive into that whole scene easily these days.

You can always look through Discogs' lists to find some, it's pretty exhaustive I think : https://www.discogs.com/fr/search/?limit=250&style_exact=Vaporwave&page=1 Didn't know about that Triangles album, I've got to say it's pretty dope, I used to listen to quite a bit of trap when there was mainly instrumental productions not all these doped up wannabes awkwardly ego-tripping about shit they never did over a beat they did not compose. I don't really know which one it is but I wouldn't put that in the vapor genre though, also I checked out his first album(I love how all these kids are restarting the cassette industry too) it's much more slow and ambient but pretty decent. That Woob track is fire also, the whole album Tokyo Run is fire actually. And I really dug that Street Fever track but the french lyrics with a bad accent kind of fucked it up for me
Here's a nice vaporwave track from 회사AUTO :
And a really cool dark techno soundcloud : BRECHE

Haha, I should’ve picked a different song. Almost all of Street Fever’s music is instrumental sans vocals.

Yeah only a couple on the Afflictions EP from what I could hear, nice find man dark heavy sounds and I like the funky side of it. Some really nice tracks on his soundcloud like dismal and the Gesaffelstein remix. Well bandcamp won't let me play that Woob album anymore so I'm back to this

@burke Thanks for all that info man. I'll start with some of those reddit subs and see where that leads me. In the end it's worth it but damn I wish it did't take so much time to sift through all the mundane tracks to find those couple gems.
Into the rabbit hole I go...

I have so many ideas it's crazy. I just got introduced into EDM within the last year and I swear it is changing the way I think. I feel like it connects the mathematical side of my brain to the creative side......

We’re in the last days of 2017, and I think I’ve narrowed down my favorite tune of the year. It’s a tough call, impossible really, so I’m just going by what my favorite song is from my favorite album of the year. It’s a bit of an an odd choice for me, but I think I pick ‘the beast within’ by Nightstop. I’ve been listening to Nightstop here & there for years, a fan but not too enamored. And then this summer he released his LP ‘Dancing Killer’ & I was blown away. This album has everything I look for, just a perfect record. Brilliant sounds & instrumentation, amazing arrangement, all wrapped up into a beautifully cohesive theme. A thrilling story from start to stop. If you dig this song, give all of Dancing Killer a whirl, you won’t be let down.

Great song, I didn’t know that one! That’s the thing about Tangerine Dream; I once calculated it, and found they’ve released a studio album or OST once every three months for the past 40 years. Or something like that. There’s not only so much material, but pretty much all of it is brilliant. Here’s another masterpiece they did for Michael Mann:
Tangerine Dream- Beach Theme
Here’s another beloved number from Risky Business:
Love On A Real Train
Tangerine Dream is, to me, in this small group of ultra-important producers without whom I wouldn’t have the music I listen to today. Acts like TD, Giorgio Moroder, John Carpenter, Jan Hammer, etc. Basically the most influential producers in the whole early synth scene.

Sorry for the non-music post, but I want to share some of my favorite album covers of the past year. Vinyl has seen a major resurgence lately, and as a result, artists have really stepped up their album art. Everyone wants to have a great looking record, so we’ve seen some real cool stuff in 2017. I’m not saying these are the best albums of the year (I do like most of these, but a couple I didn’t really enjoy that much), but these really caught my eye.
Dan Terminus- Automated Refrains

Waveshaper- Velocity

Robert Parker- Awakening

Magnatron 2.0

Carpenter Brut- CarpenterBrutLive

Daniel Deluxe- Instruments of Retribution

Meteor- Inner Demon

Ultraboss- Kyrie Electron

We all like what we like, and it’s super subjective, but fidget house always sounds to me like someone combined the worst aspects of dubstep with the most cookie-cutter parts of house. Maybe it’s one of those things where the sum is greater than its parts, but I can only focus on the parts. But hey, I mostly listen to 80s wannabe eurotrash junkfood-for-the-ears music, so what do I know?
