Mycelium or cobweb mould look alike?
    #24848655 - 12/15/17 10:10 PM (3 years, 4 months ago)

Hi all again!
I really do find this whole community so helpful and I'm grateful to be able to ask questions and speak within it, especially since you all put up with me.
Now first time on agar from my own spore print, initial plate was MS, then I chose random sections to transfer in hopes to make some clean LCs as BRF cakes are my only option.
Upon investigation before my second transfer it looked like my first plate went from being ropey in places to fuzzy everywhere. As do my transfer sections on new plates. I can see some ropey mycelium but in other places it is very fuzzy and growing into ball structures.
My question is, should I keep transferring until it is clean, is that possible here? (or is the contam and mycelium too intertwined?). Which section would be the best to transfer? Or is this just normal early mycelium from the viewing angle agar allows unlike in pf jars?

Here are some photos, you can see where the puzzle peices used to fit of which was ropey sections on the very outskirts at the time.

It seems all clean  All mycelium

In the second picture are those black stripes just a reflection?

Those black lines are actually from me cooling the scalpel into the agar before sectoring and it left some soot on the agar. The second picture you are referring to looks a bit like cobweb on the left side to me, maybe its fine and I haven't seen or understand mycelium well enough yet?

It's definitely myc, but I personally wouldn't choose to transfer from weaker looking myc like that when there's other thicker, stronger looking sections.
