Mind.at.large.... anytime I encounter people picking, I make sure they get a lesson on how to properly harvest a patch - usually with a little knowledge, most people won’t behave so thoughtlessly - it’s generally because they have no knowledge or understanding of how mushrooms work and how to treat them. Unltimately most people aren’t trying to intentionally ruin a patch - they’re screwing themselves just as much as everyone else. Don’t hesitate to share knowledge - everyone wins!

It’s been so dry and windy, I cannot imagine that there will b much fruiting going on. Last weekend was slim enough in GGP and no rain since.

Found a small patch in Benicia today. Totally blacked out, dried, shriveled mess. Judging by how dry they were, I'm guessing the patch was probably was in its prime a good 2 weeks ago.
Pretty bummed that this December is going to be such a dry month.

Hamra, good advice. The dude who was picking actually messaged me here, and seemed very courteous. I told him to cut not yank, water the patch and spread spores and stem butts, so hopefully education will help keep the patch going strong. As has been my experience most of the time, mushroom people are cool and receptive to learning.
Now I hope everyone's rain dancing this weekend.

Right on....What were the mushrooms looking like? Were they pretty dried out, or on the verge of rotting?
It's been so dry and freezing lately I don't really feel motivated to get out there to try to find new patches, since I figure most patches that are fruiting have turned into dried out crispy things and/or rotten & mushy.
I picked a small amount, less than 1oz dry, from a patch last week. Most of the mushrooms at the patch were past their prime and beginning to dry out and/or rot...If I found the patch just a week or so prior, and/or if the weather was ideal enough so the mushrooms could grow into fully mature fruits, there would have easily been at least 1/4 to 1/3Lb dry at this patch.
Typically this is the "peak" of the season for me, around the 10th to the 20th the past few years is when I'm finding/picking the most.....But with no rain in sight, at all....is that basically it ?

I have only one patch still going, maybe another one I should check. Both of them have english ivy covering the whole fruiting area. I really don't like that plant, but I am grateful for it in a new sense.
They've still got some caramel color... gotta love those microclimates. But the main patch near this one... blackened dry crispy.
Insert rain emoji I don't know about
I am confident more rain will arrive, and the season will continue. And sad baby face if I am wrong.

Actives season is over for the most part. There are still some edibles out, particularly porcini and butter boletes since they don't dry out very easily. If the rains come the spring edibles will come up - Amanita velosa, A. novinupta, chanterelles and things like that.
I imagine the people in Santa Cruz are getting a bit worried - they need rains in late December or else they will have to do a whole lot of walking to get mushrooms for their fungus fair, which is Jan 12 - 14. http://ffsc.us/fair

Only one patch that I know of out around my area pushed up a flush this season.
The patches I have planted out in a natural riparian/oak woodland type habitat will probably push up a small flush of fruits sometime in the next couple weeks. They didn't fruit until the end of December last year, those patches seem to "wake up" much later than the patches I know about in town, probably because they don't have any irrigation nearby and rely solely on morning dew and rain. They handle freezing temps and dry/wind much better than the patches in town though...Since they're sheltered by oak trees, sitting underneath a layer of leafs/twigs/duff, and there is grass growing up through the patch, they're sitting in a perfect micro-climate.

Today I went to a shopping center nearby, where I fund a gorgeous allenii patch 3(?) weeks ago. I checked on them again and they were all old/dry looking. But 40 yards down I found a NEW patch that just started to fruit maybe a week ago. (the security guard was keep looking at me walking along the area in question and I didn't feel comfortable enough to take pictures, sorry about that)
So.
Don't give up just yet. Morning frost is happening for two weeks now but apparently irrigated places that are somewhat sheltered from the frost (like this parking lot) might hold surprises for you.

Wow, very cool shots!
I found these today:

I believe these are alleniis, but their spore print worries me a bit. Please take a look. To me, they look rather brown/rusty brown from most angles on tin-foil. But how can that be?

From some angles they look more purplish tho:

I don't know what to think. The caps felt very dry, so maybe dryer spores equal browner prints? That doesn't sound sound either lol. Is it the foil?

Yes, allenii.
Maybe let them print overnight to get better prints.

What did you print on? White-balance off in that image? I see a scary color... but the mushrooms themselves all look like Psilocybe.
