AROUND THE NATION; 2 in San Francisco Sentenced in LSD Case Reuter Published: May 4, 1986
SAN FRANCISCO, May 3— A San Francisco physician and his wife have been sentenced to prison in a case that investigators said involved about 1.6 million doses of the hallucinogenic drug LSD.
Federal agents said the couple headed a ring that distributed about a fifth of the nation's illegal supply of LSD.
The doctor, Paul Stepak, 40 years old, was sentenced Friday May 2, 1986 to seven years in prison and his wife, Diane, 50, was given a 10 year sentence. They pleaded guilty last month to one count each of distributing the drug.

- 2010: Robert Widdowson surrenders himself to authorities after 20 years on the run

Deported Taos fugitive in federal custody Posted Tuesday, February 1, 2011 5:00 pm By Chandra Johnson
A 65-year-old man accused of making and trafficking ecstasy in Taos more than 20 years ago is back in federal custody after being on the lam since 1992.
The U.S. Attorney's Office announced last week that they arrested Robert Widdowson in Texas after he was deported from Belize.
A copy of the 1988 indictment against Widdowson alleges that Widdowson, then a 43-year-old man from Austin, Texas, manufactured and sold ecstasy from a house near the Río Grande Gorge Bridge.
After some legal wrangling over the evidence in the case, the DEA's case against Widdowson proceeded with a warrant for Widdowson's arrest, at which time Widdowson fled the country.
The case, the U.S. Attorney's Office says, will be prosecuted by the same man who charged Widdowson more than 20 years ago.

Dec 15, 2011 US Fugitive captured in Belize pleads guilty to drug charges a year later
In the past couple years, there have been an unusually high number of international fugitives being caught in Belize. News Five reported on many of those captures, but one wanted man whose arrest went under the radar was sixty-five year old Robert Widdowson, a resident of Texas who was on the run for over twenty years. Widdowson was wanted for manufacturing one hundred pounds of the ecstasy drug, and on December fourteenth, 2010 he was captured in Belize. He was quickly extradited and handed over to US Marshals in Houston. Exactly one year later, on Wednesday, Widdowson pleaded guilty to the drug charges and is now facing up to twenty years in jail and a million dollar fine. According to a report in the QRKE News from Albuquerque, he was indicted in 1988 after selling two thousand doses of the hallucinogenic drug to an informant working with the Drug Enforcement Administration. He was initially imprisoned for about five months until a federal judge dismissed the indictment. The case was reinstated a few months later, but Widdowson had already disappeared. It is not known how much of his twenty years on the lam was spent in Belize.

For Immediate Release December 14, 2011 FORMER FUGITIVE PLEADS GUILTY TO FEDERAL DRUG TRAFFICKING CHARGES
ALBUQUERQUE -This morning in Albuquerque federal court, Robert Widdowson, 65, pled guilty to a five-count indictment charging him with manufacturing and trafficking illegal drugs in Taos County, N.M. At sentencing, Widdowson faces a maximum penalty of 20 years imprisonment and a $1,000,000 fine. Widdowson is in federal custody and remains detained pending his sentencing hearing, which has yet to be scheduled. U.S. Attorney Kenneth J. Gonzales said that Widdowson was indicted in November 1988 and charged with (1) conspiring to manufacture N-hydroxy 3, 4- Methylenedioxyamphetamine, a designer hallucinogenic drug more commonly referred to as "Ecstasy"; (2) possession of Ecstasy with intent to distribute; (3) manufacturing of Ecstasy; (4) maintaining an establishment to manufacture Ecstasy; and (5) distribution of Ecstasy. At the time, Widdowson was a 43-year-old resident of Austin, Tex. Widdowson was detained pending trial from the date of his arrest in November 1988 until March 1989 when the presiding United States District Judge dismissed the indictment after finding that the DEA lacked the authority to designate the drugs at issue in the indictment as illegal or restricted because Congress had specifically delegated that authority to the United States Attorney General. Upon entry of this dismissal order, the Judge set conditions of release for Widdowson during the pendency of the United States' appeal. After the United States Court of Appeals for the Tenth Circuit affirmed the order dismissing the indictment, the United States sought further review by the United States Supreme Court. The indictment against Widdowson was reinstated in November 1991, after the Supreme Court ruled in a case with similar facts that the DEA's actions were constitutional and vacated the Tenth Circuit's order affirming dismissal of the indictment in this case. The case against Widdowson proceeded until March 1992, when a warrant for Widdowson's arrest was issued after he absconded from pretrial supervision. Widdowson had been a fugitive for 20 years, when he was arrested by the United States Marshal's Service in Houston, Texas on December 14, 2010, after he was deported from Belize by Belize authorities. During today's plea hearing, Widdowson pled guilty to all five counts in the indictment. In entering his guilty plea, Widdowson admitted that he manufactured approximately 120 pounds of -heaven" - his name for Ecstasy - in a residence in Rancho de Taos, N.M., where he had set up a laboratory for manufacturing "heaven." Widdowson also admitted distributing 2,000 individual doses of "heaven" to a confidential informant who was working with the DEA on October 15, 1988. The case was investigated by the DEA with assistance from the United States Marshals Service, and is being prosecuted by Assistant U.S. Attorney Presiliano Torrez, the prosecutor who handled the case when it was indicted twenty-three years ago. 11-484

*Note: According to Robert Widdowson himself, he was actually manufacturing MDHA, a rare MDMA analog.

Click here to read my exclusive Shroomery interview with Robert Widdowson! He goes into detail about his reasons for turning himself in, the aftermath, etc. For even more detail, I highly recommend buying his book Heaven's Tale. I have it and LOVED it. How he got out of serving the rest of his life in prison was a miracle.
