Keeping a plant in the terrarium along with shrooms?
    #2484364 - 03/30/04 06:44 PM (12 years, 8 months ago)

Since mushrooms give of co2 and need air exchange, and plants give off o2 and need co2, would one be able to keep both in the same terrarium?

No, don't do it. A friend of mine had the same idea and the next day all his shrooms were shrivelled. Go figure...

For not much more than a plant, an aquarium air pump would do alot more good.

Every gun that is made, every warship launched, every rocket fired signifies, in the final sense, a theft from those who hunger and are not fed, those who are cold and are not clothed... The cost of one modern heavy bomber is this: a modern brick school in more than 30 cities. We pay for a single fighter with a half million bushels of wheat. We pay for a single destroyer with new homes that could have housed more than 8,000 people..."

I can't remember where I saw it now, but I think it might have been a side note in a tek on this site. Don't quote me on that of course... But they suggested to grow a small amount (like one of them little foil dishs) of rye grass in your terrarium for this. I've never tried it, but it seemed to work fine for them.

If I get time later I'll try to remember to look for it. Like I said it was just a side note so it wasn't a tek about growing plants in there. I'll do what I can.

I know that algae puts off way more oxygen than any land plant, maybe a jar full of it would work. You could possibly put your heater in there too, as long as it doesn't get too warm.

 a good suggestion because land plants would require way too much light IMO. However, having a jar full of algae in one's terrarium seems like a huge contamination risk.

I'm not 100% on this, but dont plants also
use oxygen when in darkness?
Plants also stop evaporating water
from there pores in high humiderty.

But the main reason not to, is the amount of contams
contained in your avarage plant root system.
But it can, and has been done. Never to great
yeilds from what I've seen.
