Impluse sealer with pressure cooked bags question
    #24840265 - 12/11/17 08:58 PM (3 years, 11 months ago)

Up until now I have been using zip ties for my unicorn bags, but recently I decided to "upgrade" my setup and get an impulse sealer. I have been doing 5lb pressure cooked sawdust blocks, and I use RRs method of using tyvek in the opening.

However, I tried my new sealer out the other day with really poor results. After transferring the grain spawn, I tried to use the sealer (After practicing on a non pressure cooked bag), but the small droplets of moisture  on the inside of the bag were preventing me from getting a good seal. The water in the bag formed bubbles where the seal was being formed and I kept getting leaks. I tried playing with the settings, but if I went any hotter, I just melted the bag and got even bigger holes. Is there a trick to using an impulse sealer on pressure cooked bags? Do I need to find a way of wiping down the inside? I was worried about contaminating the block by sticking something inside the bag to dry it :/

What sealer are you using? I never have issues with that. Did a bunch today and was nervous because I used parchment paper instead of the Teflon strip.. The cat ate it. Worked better than ever even though moisture...

Hmm looks like a clone of mine should be good.. That's strange to me. Are the bags fairly flat or all wrinkled?

They were a little wrinkled from the pressure cooking. Do you fold the gussets in, or keep the top flat and wide (basically 1 layer of plastic on each side)?

The ones I did today were wide open. I don't seem to have a problem either way.
Did you try bearing down on the arm? That might help..

Ill try more pressure on the arm next time. Im a little worried though that ill keep having problems with the seal, and honestly at this stage in the process it really sucks having problems because of how many steps deep I am at this point.

What temperature setting do you use for your sealer?

Looks like the same as mine as well. I used to have the same issues but seem to have it dialed in on what to do concerning my particular sealer. I have mine set to around 4.5 press down firmly on one side, wait for maybe 5 sec after the element shuts off to make sure the plastic is not still soft and melted, take the bag off, flip it over and try to run the same seal again from the other side. Since doing that I haven't had any leaks unless I rush the plastic cooling and it stretches out the seal to failure.
